Thursday

Everybody around here seems to gearing up for the County Fair. I’m sure there will be lots of people out there to enjoy the exhibits, entertainment, and of course the full carnival and food booths. I’ll be enjoying the Southwest Skye Band and all their friends. Some members of the band have been doing the fair for many years—always at the edu-taiment venue. That means they perform and teach something about the bagpipes. This year they finally made it to the main stage. They have been told for years that they are the most popular group in the edu-tainment venue. Now they have hit the big time. Center Stage, Saturday, right when the most people are at the fair. Go Bagpipers. Go Drummers. Go Singers. I will also be looking at the Political booths. I want to be sure my National Rep and Senators know where I stand on health care reform. I’ll also be looking for the State Reps and Senators to let them know that it is time to stop acting like kindergarteners with our state budget.

Harvest is coming soon. I picked up some fresh corn for only a quarter an ear. I remember when it was 10 or 12 for a buck, but fresh corn on the cob is the best. I’ll be getting my fill of corn for the next month or so. The young tender kernels cooked before husking is one of the tastiest foods of fall. And amazing as it seems, it is good for you to boot.

This year’s fair may have to steal the Woodstock battle cry of 40 years ago..”No More Rain, No More Rain.” It looks like the showers will hit on Saturday. Nothing can put a damper on a county fair like rain. It rained around town today, with just a little spit where I live. There were lots of clouds and the high out here was only 76°. Made for a nice day.

Crazy Stuff in the News…

STACKSTEADS, England – Organizers of the World Gravy Wrestling Championships in Britain said 24 people climbed into the messy ring to raise money for charity.
Carol Lowe, 37, landlady of The Rose ‘n’ Bowl pub in Stacksteads, England, said manufacturer Bisto donated 440 gallons of gravy past its “best before” date for the wrestlers to roll around in Monday and local fire crews donated their time to hose down the participants after they exited the ring, the BBC reported Tuesday.
The men’s competition was won by Joel Hicks, 30, who wrestled under the name Stone Cold Bisto, while Emma Slater, 23, who dressed as Mrs. Claus for the event, won the women’s event.
“All the proceeds are going to East Lancashire Hospice, so it is just a nice day for everyone involved,” Lowe said.
