Random Tidbits

Irving Berlin was born on this day in 1888. Berlin is famous for writing classic American songs such as "White Christmas," "God Bless America," "Puttin' on the Ritz," and "There's No Business Like Show Business."

Known as the King of Tin Pan Alley, he wrote more than 1000 songs that appeared in movies, TV shows, and Broadway musicals. Because of this legacy Berlin is widely considered one of the greatest songwriters in American history.

He was Russian by birth.

My Rambling Thoughts

A bit cooler today, genuinely nice, and so far, no real wind issues. Wandered Andy’s property after checking the drip sprinklers. It is a really nice day.

In 2018 US police shot over 1000 people, the highest by far in the developed world. US trains police officers for 21 weeks with little required up-to-date training after hired. Most of Europe require 2 years of training to become an officer with lots of additional training after being hired. No wonder we have a police issue.

In college (’68-’71) I knew that change was coming…it was in the news, in the music, in the Universities, everywhere. I felt like I was part of a generation that was bringing much needed change. Today, in this world, I hope that change is coming and that it will remain as peaceful as possible. While I don’t feel that my generation is leading the change, like we did back then, I sure hope we are not blocking necessary change for equality for all.

Today’s Puzzle

Answer at the bottom of the page

I am a five letter word. If you remove the first letter, I become murderous. If you remove the first two letters, I may die unless the whole word is there to save me. What word am I?

Historical Events

763 BC - Assyrians recorded a solar eclipse, and that detail was later used to fix the chronology of Mesopotamian history.

1215 - The signed (sealed) Magna Carta guaranteed King John would respect feudal rights and privileges, uphold the freedom of the church within his kingdom. This was probably the same King John of Robin Hood lore.

1648 - Margaret Jones was hanged in Boston for witchcraft in the first such execution for the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

1752 - Benjamin Franklin proved that lightning is electricity (traditional date, the exact date is unknown).

1776 - Delaware Separation Day: Delaware voted to suspend government under the British Crown and officially separate from Pennsylvania.

1844 - Charles Goodyear received a patent (#3,633) for vulcanization, a process to strengthen rubber.

1846 - The Oregon Treaty established the 49th parallel as the border between the United States and Canada, from the Rocky Mountains to the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
1878 - Eadweard Muybridge took a series of photographs to prove that all four feet of a horse leave the ground when it runs; the study becomes the basis of motion pictures. The purpose of the shoot was to determine whether a galloping horse ever lifts all four feet completely off the ground during the gait, since the human eye could not break down the action. It is considered by many to be the first 'motion picture.'

1919 - The first US patent (#228,904) for a safety razor was issued to (brothers) Frederick and Otto Kampfe of New York.

1934 - The Great Smoky Mountains National Park was founded.

1985 - Rembrandt's painting Danaë is attacked by Bronius Maigys (later judged insane) who threw sulfuric acid on the canvas and cut it twice with a knife.

2012 - Nik Wallenda became the first person to successfully tightrope walk over Niagara Falls.

2015-Remains of a 2,000-year-old woman dubbed "the sleeping beauty" are announced discovered in Northern Ethiopia from ancient kingdom of Aksum

2015-800-year anniversary of "the birthplace of modern democracy", the signing of the Magna Carta by King John at Runymede, England

2017-Scotland Yard launches criminal inquiry and British Prime Minister Theresa May announces a public inquiry a day after the Grenfell Tower fire

2018-Physicist Stephen Hawking's ashes are interred in Westminster Abbey, London, between the remains of Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin

2018-Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes charged with fraud over company's blood tests
