Free Rambling Thoughts:   

We don’t change our clocks, but all the cable channels change their program times. For those of you who do change your clocks, your cable channel programs stay on the same time. So for twice a year, those of us without DST have to get change all our cable TV habits…and while a little thing, it is a real pain. Broncos—outstanding; Cardinals—not so much.

 

I learned a little more about the Electoral College today, and I now think it’s time for a small change. It turns out that 48 states have the Electoral College votes as winner-take-all. NE and MA are the exceptions. Since each state gets 2 electoral votes—(the senators) and a number based on the number of Representatives a winner take all seems outdated. If each state had its number of Representative votes based on how that district voted, then this whole ‘swing state’ thing might just disappear. I’m certainly not looking for more commercials, being from a non-swing state, but my vote would be a better vote if the person representing my district in the Electoral College had to vote the way my district voted, it would be more reasonable. I live in what is normally a more liberal and Democratic district, but under the current system, if the state popular vote is Republican, then my Electoral College vote goes Republican. Sounds like a good idea, but I can’t see Congress doing anything about it.

 

I finally gave up on the HOA trimming my Blue Spruce. Some of the branches had gotten to long that it was hard to stay on the sidewalk to get to the front door. No more. This is not the right time of year to trim, but for those who don’t know, Blue Spruce needles are very sharp and I had had enough.

Unusual Uses for Everyday Things: MUSTARD

• Combine mustard, the juice of one half of a fresh lemon, one tablespoon of salt, one tablespoon of honey, and one half cup of boiling water. Mix the ingredients thoroughly. Let the mixture cool for 10 minutes. Take some in your mouth and gargle! Warning: this concoction will not taste or smell good. After a few rounds of gargling, your throat should be feeling a lot less sore.

• If you accidentally ran over a skunk, and don't want to hold your breath every time you take a ride, it's time to get rid of that smell. Mix 1 cup of dry mustard into 3 gallons of hot water. Mix it well, and splash on to the tires, wheels, and underbody of the car. Clean by spraying the solution off. Your passengers will thank you.

• In place of a topical decongestant, try rubbing some mustard on your chest. Place a cloth, damp with hot water, on top of the mustard. Within minutes, you will feel better. You will not only be able to smell again, but the first scent you'll be greeted with will be that of delicious mustard. 

• Feet exhausted from a long day of standing? Make a soothing mustard foot bath!  Combine 1 tablespoon mustard in a pan of warm to hot water. Stir the water well to completely dissolve the mustard, and dip those poor puppies in. 

• Lower back pain? Pulled some strange muscle that you didn't know you had? End the agony by making a mustard paste for these targeted sore muscles. Combine powdered mustard seed and all purpose flour in a bowl (1 part mustard seed to 2 parts flour) and slowly stir in warm water to make a paste. Spread the mixture on one side square of cheese cloth and fold. now place the plaster on the ache, securing it with a bandage. Leave the plaster in place for no more than 20-30 minutes at a time, and feel those aches and pains just float away.

Jonkoping firefighters said they were called Wednesday by workers at a senior care home who spotted flames through the window of a nearby apartment building, Swedish news agency TT reported Thursday. "We quickly realized that it was one of those DVDs of a fireplace," firefighter Jerker Sturedahl said. Emergency responders said the TV screen fire video was quite relaxing. "We even stayed and watched the fire for a while afterward," police officer Goran Gunnarson said.
