My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

A nice fall day.

Today is my Service Comp Date. That is the day I started work for the BIA in Shonto AZ as a 3rd grade teacher. I retired after 36 great years. I taught 3rd and 4th grade and 7th and 8th grade English, was a teacher supervisor at Red Lake and Tuba Boarding. I also served at various times in various places as an Acting Principal. I had a month stint as Acting Western Navajo School Superintendent. It was a great career, a lot of work, and worth every minute. It was a great learning experience.

The ’Cardiac Cardinals’ pulled off a win in OT yesterday. They were behind the entire game until the last 2 minutes. The Broncos won too.

Hurricane Fiona has hit Puerto Rico and is doing devastating damage.

Queen Elizabeth II has been buried after her death 10 days ago. The coverage has taught everyone who watched a great deal about the Monarchy. She had a 70-year reign…a record.

When a state or the Feds send asylum seekers to another state it is disturbing. It is not ‘human trafficking’ according to the law. It is still difficult to understand. Most of these asylum seekers are Spanish speakers, with little or no English. The border states have many Spanish speakers who are here legally. Some of the asylum seekers are transported across the US, the end up in an area where there are few Spanish speakers. That makes it harder for everyone involved. My broken record is still playing: only Congress can fix this human debacle.

Random trivia…

Beer is the second most popular drink on Earth after tea. The third-most popular if you include water. In 2018, people consumed nearly 50 billion gallons of beer worldwide.

Beer is as old as human history. Beer brewing and drinking predate written language.

The earliest evidence of beer making was found in western Iran, dating back to 3,500 BC.

In ancient Mesopotamia, beer was associated with religion and ritual and was believed to have magical powers.

In Medieval Europe, Catholic monks would often undergo "beer fasts" during the forty days of Lent. They ate no food, getting calories only from beer, which they called "liquid bread."

Brewers began adding hops to beer in the 9th century AD. Today, nearly all beer is brewed with hops, which adds a zesty, bitter flavor to beer and acts as a preservative.

Myth Buster

Wall Street suicides rose after the 1929 crash

Rumor has it that the crash of 1929 caused a wave of suicides by financiers jumping from windows. A certain Winston Churchill even claimed to have witnessed such incidents, but research conducted by economist John Kenneth Galbraith showed no spike in suicides. Several deaths of distressed people were reported during this period, but none were related to the financial crisis.
