Random Tidbits
Steam power had been
around for generations, but it wasn't until 1698 that its application into
industry was made. Military engineer Thomas Savery created a patent for raising
of water by "the impellent force of fire" the first noted design of a
steam pump. In 1712 Thomas Newcomen continued Savery's work and constructed the
first successful steam engine, the atmospheric engine.
Its purpose was to rid
coalmines of floodwater, allowing miners to reach new depths. It was considered
so efficient for its time the design wasn't altered for six decades.

Garrett Monds, 30, was
sentenced to 3 1/2 to seven years in prison on March 10, following his sixth
conviction for unlawful surveillance in women's restrooms in central New York
state. Syracuse.com reported Monds spent two years in prison for the first five
incidents, in which he set up hidden cameras in restrooms in college buildings,
a warehouse, a mall and a Walmart. He was released in March 2020, but within
four months was arrested again. "That wasn't a long turnaround,"
County Court Judge Stephen Dougherty remarked, adding, "No offense, but I
don't want to see you again." Monds agreed, telling the judge, "I
really am remorseful this time around." [Syracuse.com, 3/10/2021]

My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

It is another
great weather day…just need moisture. There is a 1200+ acre wildfire about 20
miles from Flagstaff. I can see the smoke from my place. It has closed US-180
on the way to the Grand Canyon. So far it is believed to be lightning caused.
No structures are in danger, currently. Not the same on the San Carlos
Reservation. There are 2 fires is near Globe, AZ and one is at 72,800 acres
with only 8% containment; the other is 66,700 acres. Smoke has deteriorated air
quality and people are being told to stay inside without using swamp coolers
and only HVAC filtered air conditioners. Outdoor temp is about 90. There have
been some evacuations for that fire. I updated the Focus Website
with the news and obituary of one of the Focus Family of travelers. Marty passed
on the 6th from brain cancer. Her husband Duane and her sons were
all there at her passing. She was always a joy on our adventures, with her camera
and notebook always available. She took lots of candid shots that were fantastic.
As a retired Computer teacher, she would get home from a trip and spend many,
many hours organizing her photos and notes that she put into a book that anyone
on the adventure could purchase. She even let you pick how many candid pics you
wanted in your book. Her enthusiasm, friendliness, and sparkling personality
will be greatly missed by all who traveled with her. Duane and her grown
children and grandchildren are in my thoughts. There is a small herd of
Elephants vacationing throughout much of SW China. The herd of 15 wild
elephants have walked over 300 miles. They are headed to Kunming, a city of 7
million. They have not stampeded and seem to be just enjoying wandering. Their
size has caused a lot of damage in the smaller villages they have ‘wandered’
through. I hope that VP Harris’ trip to
Guatemala and Mexico is successful in dealing with the immigration issues we
are currently experiencing. She is trying a new approach by visiting the
heads of state since previous administration’s efforts haven’t worked. The
conservatives are criticizing her because she didn’t go to the border. They
fail to mention that their party’s visits to the border have been unsuccessful
in curbing the migrants. Hmmm. |
