My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts
A warm fall
day with clouds.
I did some
grocery shopping. I shop at Fry’s…a Kroger store. Found some items I needed
were on sale. Had to search my phone for their digital coupons, and saved $1.50
on fresh OJ.
Starting
yesterday through Sunday the Dark Sky coalition is having a sky watch party
here. I went up yesterday and looked at the sun through a special telescope
that won’t hurt your eyes. When I got here about 4p is was still cloudy, but
the sun broke through about 4:20pm. The sun was an amazing red ball, and you
could see the flashes of hydrogen escaping. Very cool. There were several families with elementary
students. So nice to watch them learning. A very worthwhile time.
Friday was American Indian Day or Indigenous Peoples Day. During my career, this day was a
culmination of a week’s worth of special events at every school where I worked.
Thanks to Facebook, I was able to see that the celebrations continue.
The Space
Force Anthem was released yesterday. Click here to hear it. I like the song, but the Space Force is
really a bunch of scientist geeks sitting at computers.
After Putin
made his call for 300,000 more troops, many thousands are leaving Russia for
neighboring countries. Since many do not require a visa for Russian citizens,
it is a just a long line of people waiting for their passport to be stamped.
There are also huge demonstrations against Putin and with many being arrested
and placed in jail. I was in Russia a couple of years ago and can’t believe the
changes that have happened since my visit. Horrific.

Superstitions
Friday the 13th
The stigma
attached to Friday the 13th is widely believed to have biblical roots. The
number 12 is seen in many cultures as a sort of “perfect” number and adding one
more to that throws things off a bit. According to the bible, Judas was the
13th guest to arrive at the Last Supper and Friday was widely believed to be
the day Jesus was crucified (but has since been brought into question.)
Similarly in
Norse mythology, Loki was the 13th guest to arrive at a dinner for the gods in
Valhalla and wreaked havoc on the whole event. The Friday superstition also has
origins in the U.S. where (in the 19th century) all executions took place on
Friday.
There's even
a word for people who fear Friday the 13th: friggatriskaidekaphobics.
