How many can you identify?…answers in Today’s Birthdays

Free Rambling Thoughts:
A nice drive over to Williams for a great lunch, some downtown shops, and gift exchange with our retirement group. Cheryl made a great broccoli and cheese soup, outstanding cranberry salad and perfect pumpkin nut mini muffins. A great way to spend a cloudy afternoon. We all were reminded of our own teaching days and are glad we aren’t in education now, and wondered how much more education will be changing in the next decade. We all saw changes in our 30+ years, and some changes involved more violence in the schools and in the classrooms, but never to this degree. We are still expecting about 6” of snow tonight. A little has started falling but it isn’t sticking yet.

This is certainly hot tub weather…Mary reminded us today that she and Mike head for their’s every evening before dinner. Sure sounds good.

With all the talk about changes, one obviously is in the care of mental health patients. In order to help the mentally ill, most of our ‘institutions’ have closed. Sadly, the mentally ill have very few options in our society. One is drugs…medications…that have many side effects. We are learning now that many parents can’t get help until the individual is charged and goes through the court system. Then it appears they get minimal in patient services and are either released or sent to jails or prisons. We in Flagstaff have a real problem with ‘street’ people. Many are dependent on alcohol or illegal drugs. Shelter space is very limited, and basically nothing for women. Several people die each year on the street by freezing temperatures or violence against them. Some very caring people work at the shelter but few are trained to deal with mental health issues or alcohol issues. Some clients end up in the ER for the night, and then they are back on the streets. One person who recently died of hypothermia was well known to the police with over 40 contacts in the past few years. I sure hope the communities come together and find some answers.

 Joke-of-the-day:
A Doctor was addressing a large audience in Tampa.. 'The material we put into our stomachs is enough to have killed most of us sitting here, years ago. Red meat is awful. Soft drinks corrode your stomach lining.. Chinese food is loaded with MSG. High fat diets can be disastrous, and none of us realizes the long-term harm caused by the germs in our drinking water. However, there is one thing that is the most dangerous of all and we all have eaten, or will eat it. Can anyone here tell me what food it is that causes the most grief and suffering for years after eating it?'
After several seconds of quiet, a 75-year-old man in the front row raised his hand, and softly said,
'Wedding Cake.'
Rules of Thumb:
Easy shortcuts to make an ‘educated’ guess
TURN WITH YOUR FOOT ON THE GAS
When driving an all-wheel-drive vehicle, brake before the corner and keep your foot lightly on the gas through the entire corner. This keeps the AWD engaged and provides better traction than braking than the more normal brake halfway/accelerate out technique.
Yeah, It Really Happened
Spanish authorities say they have arrested a Panamanian woman arriving at Barcelona airport with approximately 3 pounds of cocaine concealed in her breast implants.
The Interior Ministry said that border police noticed fresh scars and blood-stained gauze on her chest as well as pale patches beneath her skin.
The woman said she had recently had breast implant surgery. The statement said police were suspicious and sent her to a local hospital where the implants were removed and found to contain cocaine.
The woman arrived in Spain from Bogota, Colombia. European authorities routinely submit passengers arriving from Latin America to stringent checks to combat drug smuggling.
Somewhat Useless Information
  • In 2011, use of marijuana by teenagers hit a 30-year peak, with one out of every 15 high school students reporting they smoke most days, and for the first time U.S. teens reported smoking more pot than cigarettes. But: teenagers don't smoke any more pot in states where medical marijuana is legal than in ones where it's not. Legalization advocates argue that the best way to reduce use by minors is to legalize and regulate pot.
  • It's true that marijuana smoke, like tobacco smoke, contains carcinogens. But even hardcore pot smokers typically consume much less pot than tobacco smokers do cigarettes, probably not enough to cause cancer. A 2006 UCLA study concluded that even heavy marijuana use does not lead to lung cancer. "We hypothesized that there would be a positive association between marijuana use and lung cancer, and that the association would be more positive with heavier use," said the study's lead author. "What we found instead was no association at all, and even a suggestion of some protective effect." This and other studies suggest that pot can actually inhibit the growth of cancerous tumors.

All ‘data’ info is from the internet sites and is usually checked with at least one other source, but I have learned that every site has mistakes and sadly once out the information is out there, many sites simply copy it and is therefore difficult to verify. Also for events occurring before the Gregorian calendar was adopted [1582] the dates may not be totally accurate.
