 Today’s Birthdays:
How many can you identify? Answers in Today’s Birthdays

My Free Rambling Thoughts
Sure is hard to believe that winter is here. Our temps are like early spring or late fall. The lack of moisture is becoming a big threat to our forest each and every day. It is so strange being outside requires no jacket or sweater, just a long sleeved shirt…and long pants in mid January.

My brother and his wife are suffering though the cold and snow in NYC. Wish they could send some of that moisture my way…but they just deal with it and wait for it to melt.

Remembering TV’s great shows:
"All in the Family" Norman Lear brought domestic television comedy into the real world with the Bunkers, whose '70s culture clashing hit home with an unflinching pungency but also a surplus of heart. And then came "Maude," "The Jeffersons," "Good Times" and more: an empire of meaningful humor.
Auction Prices
A scrap of tape. How much would you pay for a scrap of old tape allegedly used by performance artist extraordinaire (or Lady Gaga's artsy friend, as some know her) Marina Abramovic? If you said over $200, then you must have been a part of this year's bidding war on eBay, vying for a glorified piece of trash from Abramovic's "The Artist is Present" exhibition.
OK Then…

Yeah, It Really Happened
RALEIGH, N.C. - North Carolina State University scientists report developing a simple, effective and relatively inexpensive technique that may reduce biofuel production costs. The technique involves removing lignin from plant material "biomass" that serves as a feedstock for biofuels. Lignin, which protects plant cell walls, is difficult to break down or remove from biomass such as the non-edible parts of the corn plant. The lignin needs to be extracted to reach the energy-rich cellulose used to make biofuels, the researchers said. "Finding inexpensive ways to remove lignin is one of the largest barriers to producing cost-effective biofuels," chemical and biomolecular engineering doctoral student Ezinne Achinivu said. "And our approach is very promising." The researchers' technique makes use of a number of inexpensive-to-create liquid salts called "protic ionic liquids" that are mixed with biomass, and then heated and stirred. The lignin dissolves into the liquids, leaving the cellulose behind as a solid. The solid is easier to process, and by filtering it from the mixture it is ready for use in the next biofuel production steps. "This PIL-based technique can be easily scaled up and is likely to be both more energy efficient and less expensive than existing biomass pretreatment techniques for removing lignin," Achinivu said.
Somewhat Useless Information
  • Daffodils are members of the Narcissus family.
  • Daffodils originated in south west Europe.
  • These days, the majority of daffodils are grown in the Channel Islands, Great Britain, Holland and the Isles of Scilly.
  • There are over 25,000 varieties of daffodils and they come in yellow, white, orange and even a peach/pink shade.
  • All parts of the daffodil are poisonous.
