My Free Rambling Thoughts   

Another beautiful summer day.

 

A friend from Tuba stopped by—nice visit. He had just come from his newest grandson’s Hopi naming in Tuba…and picking up more food for the feasts that follow. Caught on some Tuba happenings and being glad I’m retired. Tuba staff is still in workshops, then a one week break, then more workshops. Summer has basically disappeared for those teachers. They do get good pay, so it’s not all bad. I’m just glad it isn’t me.

 

I watched my Sunday news programs. So many troubles in the world. While I have wanted to visit Turkey, guess this isn’t the time. The people over there are really suffering under another horrific regime. It is so hard to imagine why these governments ever came to power. All the crazies over here that are worried about tyranny in America need to travel and see what real tyranny is.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Staying in a Kansas City, Mo., hotel, Tyler Schaefer, 10, opened a drawer in his hotel room and found $10,000, he said. "He looks for stuff at random. He's very observant," his father, Cody Schaefer, said. After the two checked into the room Saturday, Tyler methodically began opening drawers and found the neatly stacked cash.

"We need to call the cops," the father told the son. They found two off-duty police officers, working at the hotel, who summoned Sgt. Randy Francis, a property and evidence supervisor, who stored the cash at a police facility, the Kansas City Star, reported Friday.

Missouri law says lost money can revert to the finder after about seven months. Cody Schaefer lives in South Dakota and meets his ex-wife annually in Kansas City, a central meeting point between their homes, to provide their three children a summer vacation, the newspaper said. He said he told several friends and relatives about his son's find, and most agreed his son did the right thing. "I didn't come there with $10,000 and I didn't leave with $10,000, so it was a wash," he said.

• Methylphenidate (Ritalin) is a medication prescribed for individuals (usually children) who have an abnormally high level of activity or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). According to the National Institute of Mental Health, about 3 to 5 percent of the general population has the disorder, which is characterized by agitated behavior and an inability to focus on tasks. Methylphenidate also is occasionally prescribed for treating narcolepsy. Methylphenidate is a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant. It has effects similar to, but more potent than, caffeine and less potent than amphetamines. It has a notably calming effect on hyperactive children and a "focusing" effect on those with ADHD.

• More than 100 years ago, the felt hat makers of England used mercury to stabilize wool. Most of them eventually became poisoned by the fumes, as demonstrated by the Mad Hatter in Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. Breathing mercury's fumes over a long period of time will cause erethism, a disorder characterized by nervousness, irritability, and strange personality changes.

• Ricin is a protein produced by the castor oil plant, Ricinus communis, which is highly toxic (the minimal lethal dose is around 1 µg / kg body weight, that means 1/15th of a milligram could kill a 150 lb. person). Ricin can be a dangerous contaminant, making the production of castor oil a precisely controlled process.

• 'Soldiers disease' is a term for morphine addiction. The Civil War produced over 400,000 morphine addicts.

• The anti-malarial drug quinine is taken from the bark of the Andean cinchona tree.

• The average cup of coffee contains more than 1000 different chemical components, none of which is tasted in isolation but only as part of the overall flavor.
