What a great day in
Flag. Nice to spend time outside without a jacket. Flag had a decent sized
Occupy Rally today…I drove by…and honked.
The 20/20 report on Pine
Ridge was amazing last night. It’s on line if anyone missed it. They talked a
lot about Wounded Knee Public School and Red Cloud High. It took over 18 months
to make the film, and talked about broken dreams, teen pregnancy, alcohol and
substance abuse, and related death and suicide. It is very depressing and I
must say that after spending 9 months at Pine Ridge, I don’t have any answers
either. I hope this report finds some answers from somewhere.
I don’t have a lot of
faith in that as the general population has no idea what is going with the
Native People...except for the art, dance and other surface culture. Urban Outfitters--a clothing chain store has
introduced a new line of “Navajo” clothes. The 1st problem is it is
against Federal law to use a tribe’s name in anything that is not made by the
tribe or its members. The second problem is that some of the ‘clothing’ is
disrespectful to the name ‘Navajo’—including a Navajo Print Fabric Flask cover,
Navajo Feather Earrings, 2 Navajo bracelets for $8.00, and a strapless Navajo
Dress. The news reports tell us that the Navajo Nation has contacted the company
headquarters and asked them to cease and desist, because of the Federal Law.
The company issued a statement that will not be changing their fall clothing
and accessory lines. Such ignorance is so rampant in the corporate world.

Somewhat Useless Information .
Bessie Smith, the
greatest of all blues singers, is known as the "Empress of the
Blues". A protégé of an earlier blues singer named Ma Rainey, Bessie
recorded during the 1920s. Her flair and dramatic style would set the stage for
many artists to come, including other transitional favorites from the 1950's,
such as Etta James and Dinah Washington. One hit was "Nobody knows you when you're down and out" Bessie Smith died at the young age of
forty-three in a tragic automobile accident.
The first rock ‘n’ roll
song to hit #1 was "Rock Around the Clock"
by Bill Haley and His Comets. It
held the top spot for 8 weeks.
Yeah, It Really Happened .
SEASIDE, Ore. - An
Oregon surfer who was knocked off his board by a 10- to 12-foot shark said he
wound up riding for a few seconds on the large beast's back. Doug Niblack,
whose story was backed up by witnesses, said he was surfing Monday at "the
cove" in Seaside when the shark, which he suspects was a great white,
knocked him off his board, KATU-TV, Portland, Ore., reported Thursday.
Niblack said he landed
on the shark's back and the monster fish lifted him out of the water above his
knees for several seconds before swimming away. "It pulled my leg about
three feet, hooked on my leash, then it was gone," Niblack said. "And
that was the scariest part, when I didn't know where it was anymore."
Niblack and fellow
surfer Jake Marks said they paddled to shore as quickly as they could.
"You just have that fight or flight thing going on," Marks said.
"The shark was a lot bigger than us, so we chose flight." Experts
said shark sightings are rare on the Oregon coast, but they are sometimes found
in the area.

A police officer was
investigating an accident on a two-lane, narrow road in which the drivers had
hit virtually head-on.
One driver, an extremely
elderly woman, kept repeating, "He wouldn't let me have my half of the
road!"
After gathering as much
information as possible, he angrily approached the other driver, who was
examining his own damage. The police officer asked, "That old lady says
that you wouldn't let her have her half of the road. Why not?
In exasperation, the man
turns from his smashed car and says, "Officer, I would have been HAPPY to
give her half of the road --- if she had just let me know WHICH half she
wanted!!!!"
