Rambling Thoughts

It is warming up…nice. I was able to take a nice walk late this
morning.
The finches that brightened my back area seem to have headed
south. They haven’t eaten any of their special seeds for about a week. So
today, I took down their feeder and added two suet blocks for those birds that
stay around this fall/winter. This summer sure went by quickly.
I was able to get a haircut this afternoon…always good to have an
in at the place. I got there at one and the whole place was filled. I signed in
and my stylist said, come back in 20 minutes. I did, and got her right away. Her
daughter’s class as supposed go on an overnight camping trip but the colder
weather stopped that.
Quite few years back, I would not shop at any store that put up
Christmas stuff before Thanksgiving. Then I gave in and said before Halloween.
Now some of the stores have stuff up before Columbus Day. I for one am fed up
with the greed. For those that still don’t believe that Corporations are
running this country and are out to get every cent possible, this is just one
more example. I just read an article about what not to buy at this time of year.
Turns out that this is the time of year that most stores raise their prices on
most things used as ‘gifts’ at Christmas. They raise the prices now, then as
the holidays approach, they put them on sale for 10-33% off—the amount they are
raising them now. Some sale. Any way to get our hard earned money. Buyer
Beware!

According to superstition, if you stare into a mirror at midnight
on Halloween, you will see your future spouse.
The first Jack-o-Lanterns were made in Ireland out of hollowed-out
turnips. A piece of coal was inserted into the hollow and the
"lantern" was meant to guide the way of poor old Jack who wasn't
welcome in Heaven but was also barred from entering Hell for tricking the
devil. According to legend, the devil gave this crude lamp to Jack so that he
could walk the earth forever in limbo. When the Irish brought this tradition to
America, they apparently decided that pumpkins were much easier to carve than
turnips, and the modern-day Jack-o-Lantern was born!
Although there are many theories on the origin and history of
Halloween, it is generally accepted that Halloween dates back to an ancient
Celtic festival known as Samhain, or the Celtic New Year. It was believed that
the spirits of everyone who had died during the year would return on the eve of
Samhain to seek living bodies to possess for the following year. The Celts
would dress in ghoulish costumes and hold noisy revels in an attempt to
frighten away these spirits. Food and drink was also offered to pacify the
dead. There are many tales of unfortunate souls being burned at the stake
because they were perceived to have been possessed by one of the returning
spirits. Around the turn of the first century AD, Romans abandoned this custom
of human sacrifice in favor of the burning of effigies.

It Really Happened

HONOLULU - A Tennessee couple who married in 1984 have made it
into Guinness World Records by exchanging their vows for the 100th time. Lauren
and David Blair, ages 60 and 58, said they first exchanged vows in 1984 in
Topanga Canyon, Calif., and they have since renewed their vows 99 times, with
the most recent being Sunday in Honolulu, Guinness World Records said.
The couple said each of their ceremonies has taken place in a
different location. "We were both in long-term relationships in the past
that didn't work out," Lauren Blair said. "We knew we were meant for
each other and wanted to continually share that vow experience. I love to look
into David's eyes as he is repeating his vows. I know that this man will love
me until the day I die. Of course, David will tell you that he does it for the
honeymoons!"
