My Rambling Thoughts
Restful two days…nothing special, just enjoying our beautiful town.
In my very young days, my parents still called today ‘decoration day’, then they, along with the country, slowly changed to Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving, while Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans. I am always surprised the number of Americans who don’t recognize this difference. Whatever the reason, those who serve in the military are serving a politician. Most of my adult life my country has been involved in some kind of ‘war’. If the first people who went to the battle field were the politician’s close relatives, I think there would be fewer wars. For many, today’s military has been a way to get out of poverty, get a better education. Sadly, many of those volunteers lost their lives. Sad.

An old lady walked into a newspaper office.

She approached an employee and said that her husband had died and that she would like to have an obituary appear in the paper.

The employee gave her a form and told her to write the obituary on it. She wrote, "Earl W. Worth died Saturday, December 2nd at his home. Services are at The Baptist Church at 3 P.M."

The employee looked at the form and said, "I'm sorry, ma'am, but obituaries are limited to 7 words apiece.

The woman took another form and wrote, "Earl died. '57 Chevy truck for sale."

Yep, It Really Happened
ASPEN, Colo. (UPI) - A Colorado man accused of violating a protection order brought a stuffed owl with "law degrees from Yale, Harvard and Stanford" to court as his public defender. Charles Abbott of Aspen, who was accused of violating a protection order taken out by his former roommate, Michael Stranahan, placed the stuffed owl on the table in front of him during his Tuesday appearance in Pitkin County Court Judge Erin Fernandez-Ely's courtroom. "He's a very sensitive guy, has law degrees from Yale, Harvard and Stanford," Abbott said. "I think he'll be able to represent me before a public defender comes online." Abbott allegedly violated the protection order by going to Stranahan's home to retrieve his belongings. Stranahan, who said he was out of town when Abbott went to the home, accused Abbott of taking some of his property. Fernandez-Ely ignored the owl, which Abbott dubbed "Solomon," and asked Stranahan if he would be willing to amend the protection order to allow for mediation. "I want it to remain in place because I don't feel safe about being in close proximity to Charles Abbott," Stranahan said.

Somewhat Useless Information
A rubber band in some regions is known as a binder, elastic or lacker band or gumband in Australia.

Synthetic Rubber - About 3/4's of the world rubber come from crude oil.

Chicle, widely used as a base for chewing gum, is another latex product.

Latex is the sap of various plants, mostly from the rubber tree. If you expose the sap to the air it hardens and become 'rubbery'. Over the year various cultures learned that if you add certain other juices and saps to the mass it becomes more elastic and lasts longer.

Latex is used in many types of clothing. It is different from rubber in that it is less refined and often thinner. Worn on the body (or applied directly by painting) it tends to be skin-tight, producing a "second skin" effect. It has a shinier finish than rubber.

A story says that the first European to return to Portugal from Brazil with samples of such water-repellent rubberized cloth so shocked people that he was brought to court on the charge of witchcraft.

Disclaimer: All opinions are mine…feel free to agree or disagree.
All ‘data’ info is from the internet sites and is usually checked with at least one other source, but I have learned that every site contains mistakes and sadly once the information is out there, many sites simply copy it and is therefore difficult to verify. Also for events occurring before the Gregorian calendar was adopted [1582] the dates may not be totally accurate.
