Free Rambling Thoughts…
A Day of Remembrance…flag posted outside my house…check…attend city of Flagstaff’s ceremony…check. A good day in Flag.

The town’s ceremony was well done…Nat’l Guard from Camp Navajo was there with the fallen soldier rifle, hat and shoes. The town’s cops and fire fighters were there. Southwest Skye Pipe and Drums were there. Our state legislator and our Congressional Rep were there along with the Mayor. Some young ballet dancers did a good show on the hard concrete. No politics, just the importance of the day. While much of the hype today centers in NYC where so many lost their lives. We were all reminded of the two other sites—the Pentagon, and the PA farm. In addition, a list of the military personnel from the Northern AZ who have given their lives in Afghanistan and Iraq was read. Lori Piestewa of Tuba was the first of the 15. Nice to be reminded that 9-11 was only the beginning.

I went up to Tom Cabin, whom I have known since my Tonalea days to let him know how much I appreciated his words. He shook my hand and said let’s go get some coffee. We had a good catch up and sharing conversation for about 2 ½ hours. His son is living in Tucson with his girl friend and new son. Tom makes a proud grandfather. His son has had a tough time—he lost his adoptive mom, he was always an outsider in Tuba—being half black/half white. He finished high school in Montana at a boarding school for troubled kids. He seems to be doing quite well now. It was an unexpected and great afternoon.

Last night, starting about 11pm we had bright lightning, loud thunder, and a very hard rain. If went on for at least an hour…if fell asleep about midnight, and it was still going. Tonight seems to be more of the same. We need the rain, but would prefer a more gentle soaking rain as these cloudbursts end up in the drainage systems.
