Free Rambling Thoughts

Busy day. I ran more
errands. Then I attempted to notify my bank of my upcoming trip. I have two
credit cards and a debit card with the same bank. My last intercontinental trip
took one phone call. Today it took three. I have automated phone service, but couldn’t
get to a human. Big banks are nice if you travel in the US…ATM cards work in
every city. Big banks suck when trying to talk to a human. For my Debit card
the human couldn’t spell Ethiopia and then couldn’t punch in the right
information into the computer. I’m not planning on using the cards that much,
but have found that in some locations, it is easier and cheaper to withdraw ATM
cash in that country’s currency than try to use an exchange place. We’ll see if
that works this time too.
I was another really
nice sunny day here in Flag. I hope it lasts the rest of the week, as Ethiopia
is gonna be very warm. It is nearer the equator than we are, and it is about
the same elevation as Flag. That should work out good for me.

they have genetically engineered grass able to withstand the “prodigious
amounts” of herbicide needed to kill Roundup-resistant “superweeds.” Developed
by chemical and seed company Monsanto, the strain of Kentucky bluegrass isn’t
subject to federal regulations because instead of relying on bacteria, which
the USDA does regulate, Monsanto scientists used a “gene gun” to shoot the
modified gene into the grass’s DNA. (Wired, The New York Times)
