The primary
elections clearly showed that our country is divided. There were good and bad
candidates…on both sides. No primaries around here.
The first all-Black
climbing team has reached the summit of Mt. Everest. Cool.
Navajo are
the part of the Indigenous people who are given a number by the government.
Today those numbers are given by the tribe and show the fraction of ‘Indian
blood’ of the person. Navajo is a matriarchal culture. The woman carries the
power and the strength of the family. When a Navajo identifies their clans,
they start with the mother’s clan. For some Navajo women, birthing is important,
and the male is merely a sperm donor. It is not uncommon for the birth
certificate to only list the mother. That means that the child is only listed
as ½ Navajo. Most times the child knows who the father is but does not play any
part of their raising. I just learned that a good friend, the son of a former
student, and his wife are part of the group listed as ½…even though the father
in both cases was also 4/4 Navajo. This couple has a 3-year-old son. Because neither
grandfather was on either birth certificate, the you boy is also listed as ½. If
the boy marries a Navajo, no problem. However, if he marries a non-Navajo the
child will be ¼. This will prevent the child from having some of the tribal services.
This is insanity.
