My Rambling Thoughts

Our town got cold last night. Not as great a temperature change as Denver, but still, cold is cold. I had an eye checkup this morning at 8:25. It was 33° when I headed out. Got a good report from the Dr.

While the Federal government still calls it Columbus Day, three states and dozens of municipalities now recognize this upcoming holiday as ‘Indigenous People’s Day’. All I can say is change takes time. So HAPPY INDIGENOUS PEOPLE’S DAY to all. For those who cling to Columbus Day here are 2 facts:
Chris did not ‘discover’ this continent…hundreds of thousands of people were already here.
Chris was not the first to find this continent…remember Leif Erikson.

Here in the middle of a national forest we always worry about wildfires. California is having horrendous wildfires in the mountains are causing horrendous damage around California. The pictures from the fires are frightening for anyone seeing them. The winds there are only making the situation worse.

As an adoptee I always see stories about adoption that others probably skip over. The latest in AZ is depressing. The County Assessor in Maricopa County (Phoenix) has been arrested for fraud. He also runs an adoption service. Sounds like he brought pregnant women from the Marshall Islands, where he did his LDS mission, to AZ to have their babies. They were paid $10K, less expenses, and given help to fill out Medicaid forms saying they were AZ citizens to pay for the medical costs of the pregnancy. In AZ they delivered at least 29 babies, moved to other states to complete the adoptions, and then moved back to the Marshall Islands. This is a multi-state (AZ, UT, AR) investigation continues. He may have charged adoptive parents up to $40K to adopt. Thus far the adoptive parents have been told that they are not going to lose their adopted children. My mom & dad adopted my brother and I as infants (I was 13 days old, my brother was 14 days old) through the Colorado state adoption center. For the first year + of each adoption, they had several agency visits to insure things were OK. They believed that during or following any visit, they could have their child taken away. I hope that if this guy is found guilty, he has to pay the money back to both the birth parent and the adoptive parents, and spend quite a few years in a tough prison.

This is Western Navajo Fair weekend in Tuba. I am not going but I did go every year while I was working there. There is always a nice parade, a carnival, rodeo, and lots of traditional food, and a nine-day traditional ceremony. It is family gathering for people from all around. It was always nice to see former students, their families, and catch up. A few years ago one of my former student’s husband started running the fair. He has made great changes that draw in more and more people of all ages to the fair. This year, along with concerts for the youth, he has added ‘Elder Day’ and an ‘Elder tent’ for people to meet and greet, Elder rest areas throughout the fairgrounds, and much more. I really want to go, but the traffic is always horrendous and the normal 10 minute drive to the fairgrounds takes at least an hour most of the day and up to 2 hours during peak times. Wishing everyone there a great weekend.

Today’s Puzzle
Answer at the bottom of this page

My letters become three faces,
One has gone to far-away places,
Another sets a standard high,
The third can never be a guy.

What are the three words?
