My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

Nice morning. Thunder and all the rest expected late this afternoon.

The local paper finally had a headline for what everyone here already knew: Monsoon are unusually persistent. It really is a good thing, unless you are the part of the population that lives below any of our recent burns. They have been dealing with flash flood conditions most of the entire summer. Those areas have been placing thousands of sandbags around to protect their property. A summer with many memories…some good, some not so much.

Some of you will remember Sacheen Littlefeather. She is the lady who walked on stage at the Academy Awards and on behalf of Marlon Brando, refused to accept the award due to the treatment of Native Americans throughout our history. Her birth certificate name is Marie Louise Cruz. Her father was a White Mountain Apache/Yaqui and her mother was Anglo. At the time, the Academy, the press, and many others treated her very badly. There was a lot of ‘how dare she…’. Now, some 50 years later the Academy has apologized for its behavior toward her. She received the letter this week and it will be read aloud at the next live presentation. She appreciated the letter and said she had a lot of patience.

It is disappointing that now 50 years later, there is still mistreatment of minorities in the entertainment industry. Non-minority people continue to play major roles of a minority character. Movies about minorities do not match up with their proportion of the population. It has been shown through many studies, that seeing characters like yourself in positive roles in movies improves your self-esteem.

When I was a teacher in the early 1970’s in Shonto, if we had good attendance throughout the week, Friday afternoon was movie time in the gym. All 800+ students and teachers would go to the gym and see a movie. Western movies were the most popular with the students.
They would always cheer for the good guys and boo the bad guys…even when the bad guys were Indians. When asked why the hated the Indians, there response was ‘I’m not an Indian, I’m a Navajo. Lesson learned…by me.

  Steam: 'Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye'

Originally a fictitious studio-only band, when the song hit, producer and writer, Paul Leka had to put together a real band to go out on tour. While the song topped the charts, its biggest claim to fame came years later at a 1977 Chicago White Sox game. This event turned "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" from a one-hit wonder into a legendary sports song.
