Rambling Thoughts
Beautiful Sunday.
Our discussion last night was great. I learned so much about the refugee
crisis over there. The world community has a lot of trouble identifying
terrorists, so the response seems to be that ‘assume all Muslims are terrorists
until they prove otherwise.’ That scenario has become more difficult for non-terrorist
Muslims with the recent sleeper cell phenomena throughout the world. What that
means for the Syrians who are refugees in various countries is that no country
trusts the refugees. Jordan and Lebanon are reaching a breaking point with
refugees as their infrastructures are not strong enough to support more
refugees. A real dilemma for the world but more of an issue for the Syrians who
are trying to escape the ravages of a civil war. Something to watch for sure.
I caught up on my Sunday news shows and learned even more about
Syria. Then I caught up on some DVRed programs.
Nice lazy Sunday.

25 YEARS
AGO
On Sunday, there were a huge number of wrecks, the highway patrol
says the worst in Arizona history. On I-40 near Walnut Canyon, the eastbound
lane was blocked for 12 hours with an estimated 42 vehicles tossed like jack
straws due to fog and black ice. Dr. Don Hales and some of the FMC emergency
room staff went by helicopter to the site and the numerous casualties were
brought in to be cared for.

The
Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Chapel
There was no catholic priest assigned to Flagstaff until about
1889. Before then a Jesuit Father visited Flagstaff several times to say Mass
at private residences of which the first of recor was in 1887 at the home of
P.J. Brannen. Flagstaff residents petitioned to the Bishop to assign a
permanent priest to Flagstaff. He challenged residents to build a church and he
would then assign a priest.
P.J. Brannen donated a plot of land south of the railroad tracks
and plans were created and the first church was built at Ellery and Beaver
Streets in 1888 with much of the brickwork done by Father Carlo M. Ferrari. The
first Mass was said at the new church on Christmas, 1888 and in honor of that
day, the church was named “Church of the Nativity”.
Realizing that Flagstaff's population was increasing and in the
future a new larger church would have to be built to accommodate an enlarging
parish membership, the church purchased land north of the railroad tracks. The
new Church of the Nativity was completed at the corner of Cherry and Beaver
Streets where it stands today. The church welcomes visitor tours and holds a
regular Mass schedule.
The named evolved to “Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary” and
remains a historic example of Gothic architecture. The church welcomes visitors
to tour the chapel and to attend its regular schedule of Masses.

A brain surgeon told a patient “you have a
growing mass in your brain, it needs to be tended to immediately or it will
kill you"
The patient agreed to surgery the very next day.
Immediately after opening the skull the surgeon took a biopsy of the ugly growing
mass and gave it to the surgical nurse with instructions to rush it to the lab
and have it analyzed.
After a few minutes the nurse returned with the results and stood silently and
grimly in front of the surgeon…. The surgeon finally asked…."WELL IS IT
MALIGNANT?"
The nurse replied…" I'm afraid it’s worse" …" WORSE", the
surgeon barked, "WHAT CAN BE WORSE THAN MALIGNANT?"

An Australian man taking a nearly 10,000-mile walk across the
country in his Star Wars Stormtrooper costume said the armor saved him from a
deadly snake bite. Scott Loxley, whose 9,320-mile walk across Australia is
aimed at raising money for the Monash Children's Hospital in Melbourne, said he
was leaving Yalboroo, Queensland, Wednesday on his way to Mackay when he
spotted what appeared to be a dead snake at the side of the road. "He's
lunged at me and bit me. But the good news is the armor -- he bit me in the
shin -- and the armor actually protected me and stopped the bite," Loxley
said. "I could feel the teeth scraping on the plastic, but the armor
actually stopped something." Loxley said the stormtrooper armor, long
criticized by fans of the franchise as ineffective against attacks ranging from
laser blasts to rocks thrown by Ewoks, proved it was in some way effective.
"So all those people that rag on the old stormtrooper because you know,
the armor doesn't do this, it doesn't do that ... it stopped a snake bite and
probably saved my life today," he said. Loxley said the snake appeared to
be a king brown snake, ranked as the sixth deadliest snake in Australia by the
Australian Geographic.
