My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

Another nice summer day. I’m enjoying the break from the monsoon.

I grew up in an era where fast-food restaurants were full of high schoolers working there after school, on weekends, and during vacations. Back then, very few saw this as a career job. A hamburger was 15 cents. Now many adults are working the jobs and it is their main source of income. CA has just passed a law that puts the minimum wage for fast-food workers at $22/hr. Times have certainly changed.

The UN inspectors are finally on site at the Ukraine Nuclear Plant. Hoping for some good news as they do their inspections.

Alaska just had a special election to fill a congressional seat after the member passed away. It was in the news because Sarah Palin was running. Somehow, a Democrat won…first time in over 50 years. Even more exciting is that Mary Peltola, a Yup’ik Eskimo, is the first Native American ever elected to Congress.

Moon Facts…NEW

The Moon Has Been the Same Size For Millions of Years

For years, scientists thought that the moon’s volcanic activity ceased hundreds of millions of years ago with the interior cooling and the crust no longer retracting in size. As it turns out, this isn’t the case. The moon is, in fact, shrinking.

Data gathered during the Apollo program and again by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter in the 2000s shows that the moon’s fault lines are still active and producing “moonquakes.” This has led scientists to believe that it’s highly likely the moon’s crust is still retracting in size.

Now, the moon isn’t going to be the size of a football any time soon. It’s thought to have only shrunk by about 150 feet in a few hundred million years so chances are good that it will still be there when we go back in 2024.
