 Today’s Birthdays:
How many can you identify?…answers in Today’s Birthdays

My Free Rambling Thoughts
Quite the warm day for Flagstaff…our warmest of the year. While I spend a good deal of time mentioning the wind in our fair city, I must say, living at the base of Mount Elden is nice as we always have a nice small breeze. During these warm….er day, that breeze flows right through my place and makes it quite pleasant. Even better I have good control…opening the upstairs windows keeps that area cool, same with downstairs. Or I can open opposite windows up and down stairs and also keep it cool…when it is not too warm outside.

I have been reading some articles about America’s drone use under our current president, and how he somehow believes it is OK to kill American citizens with these drones…so far just on foreign soil. The more ‘liberal’ press is just starting to speak up about this, and actually the conservative press is still silent. The ongoing conversation has to do with the constitution and the Bill of Rights. Most of the discussion is on the 5th amendment which in part states: …nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law…. The President believes that this right does not apply to ‘suspected terrorists’. Several lawsuits are working their way through our system regarding the killing of several suspected terrorists who were American citizens and were killed by drones in Yemen. For me, the most worrisome part of this story is that any future president will be able to use these actions as a precedent. The current quiet outcry is that American citizens are being deprived of their rights. There also has been an increase in the killing of American citizens who are believed to be terrorists in our country. We read all the time about local police killing a robbery suspect, an alleged shooter, or some other criminal. During my lifetime, we have become a very violent nation and continue to become more violent every day. It is time for a national conversation on the dangers associated with the killing of any American, including the killing by law enforcement [local, state, and Federal].

Brain Teasers
A spoonerism is a pair of words that can have the initial sounds switched to form new words. For example, "churning bear" is a spoonerism for "burning chair" (note that the pairs do not have to be spelled the same - only sound the same). From the definitions below, can you figure out the spoonerism pairs?
1. Thumper's cellphone...mis-named nerve. 2. Where to buy a mallard...jammed portal. 3. Grizzly relative...two pin-lovers. 4. Sad iguana...Merlin slam-dunking. 5. Wasp accelerates...Half a six-pack.

Unusual Fact of the Day
When the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Dallas Cowboys in sweltering heat in September, 2000, many Eagles credited the ice-cold pickle juice they had guzzled.
Joke-of-the-day
In the middle of a forest, there was a hunter who was suddenly confronted by a huge, mean bear.
In his fear, all attempts to shoot the bear were unsuccessful. Finally, he turned and ran as fast as he could. The hunter ran and ran and ran, until he ended up at the edge of a very steep cliff. His hopes were dim.
Seeing no way out of his predicament, and with the bear closing in rather quickly, the hunter got down on his knees, opened his arms, and exclaimed, "Dear God! Please give this bear some religion!"
The skies darkened and there was lightning in the air. Just a few feet short of the hunter, the bear came to abrupt stop, and glanced around, somewhat confused.
Suddenly, the bear looked up into the sky and said, "Thank you God, for the food I'm about to receive..."

WEST HAVEN, Conn. — A woman has been charged with prostitution in Connecticut after calling police to complain about how she was being treated by a pimp.
Police say they did not find the pimp when they arrived at a Super 8 Motel in West Haven on Sunday, but they did find 35-year-old Jennifer Lowery with a man they describe as a customer.
Police charged Lowery with prostitution and 60-year-old Richard Burford of New Haven with patronizing a prostitute.
Police say Lowery told them she thought it would take police longer to show up, so she decided to conduct some business while waiting.
Somewhat Useless Information
  • Rubber shoes will do nothing to protect one from lightning.
  • Talking on the telephone is the leading cause of lightning injuries inside the home.
  • Lightning can reach over five miles in length, raise the temperature of the air by as much as 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit, and can contain a hundred million electrical volts.
  • Lightning is not confined just to thunderstorms. It has been visible in volcanic eruptions, extremely intense forest fires, surface nuclear detonations, heavy snowstorms, and in large hurricanes.
  • In the U.S., the odds of being struck by lightning in any one year is 1 in 700,000. The odds of being struck in a lifetime is 1 in 3,000. About 400 people survive lightning strikes in the U.S. each year.
  • The Red Sprite lightning that was recently discovered is discharged very high in the atmosphere, a 40-mile span between the tops of severe storm clouds to the lower ionosphere "D" layer. They are predominately red and last for a fraction of a second. Scientists are uncertain of the cause.

My Free Rambling Thoughts
Busy day…again. Had my eyes checked and am getting new glasses.  Some big changes in the last 2 years since I got new glasses…the joy of getting old…er. Discovered that buying glasses is a real pain as there are now so many choices in lens types, add-ons, and of course frames. I had decided I would shop around, but went to where I got the last glasses and found some I liked so just bought them. Should be getting them in about a week.

The story of the Phoenix lady who was arrested in Mexico for smuggling marijuana on a bus is certainly top news here in AZ. She is a Spanish speaking Mormon who went to an aunt’s funeral. We have daily reports on her, her family, and what is happening. Sen McCain is talking to officials daily since her arrest. Sen Flake is ‘monitoring’ the situation. As the story evolves it is looking more and more like she was set up to be arrested. Arresting officers have not shown up to court dates; there is videotape of her getting on the bus without any suspicious packages. Without some more evidence, she will have to be set free or destroy US/Mexico relations. Somehow, I still feel there is more to the story than we are being told.

NEW YORK - New York police said they have arrested a pint-sized 15-year-old who younger boys said mugged them, demanding $1 bills. The suspect allegedly approached younger boys in the Carroll Gardens section of Brooklyn and asked for $1. If the boys refused, the teen would brandish a razor blade to demand a dollar be handed over, the New York Post reported Saturday. Police said most of the alleged attempted muggings were unsuccessful. The teen allegedly made off with $12 in one incident, while a boy turned over his wallet in another. The suspect was apprehended at the Carroll Street subway station and the victims identified him at the police station.
Somewhat Useless Information
  • Originally, hot dogs were pork sausage links served in buns sold in Frankfurt, Germany, appropriately called frankfurters. They evolved to include both pork and beef when they moved to Vienna, Italy and were re-named wieners.
  • German immigrants brought the modern day hot dog to the shores of America where it again transformed to become the "hot dog".
  • The most expensive hot dog is sold by Serendipity 3 in New York City and is called the "Haute Dog". Grilled with white truffle oil and topped with duck foie gras and truffle butter, this hot dog costs a whopping $69.
  • Hot dogs have been sold at baseball games almost since the beginning of baseball and some parks sell their very own version including Fenway Franks in Boston and Dodger Dogs in LA.
  • According to the National Sausage and Hot Dog Council, the most commonly used condiment is mustard which is the topping preferred by 32% of Americans. The second place finisher, with 23% of the vote is ketchup and chili takes the third place spot with 17% of the vote.
  • Although most hot dogs are made from pork and/or beef, recent health concerns around the nutritional content of traditional versions encouraged producers to provide healthier alternatives. Hot dogs made from chicken or turkey are available in most grocery stores, and many meatless alternatives that are made from vegetables or soy products are also widely available.
