MY FREE RAMBLING THOUGHTS
The sun was shining and it was a nice day. The weatherman said we would reach 50, but that didn’t happen. Still a nice day.
Cheryl had to come into town for a medical appt and so we made our weekly lunch today. It was decided that we would meet next Monday for my birthday lunch. Looking forward to that. Cheryl had a good trip to visit the grandkids over the weekend. She left on Thursday and got back last night. The only snow was near Williams. Mary was in the Valley for the weekend to be with her grandkids and she wasn’t so lucky. She got stopped on I-17 when the road was closed. She had a friend staying at a resort in Sedona, so she called her, and there was room for Mary to spend the night. Her hubby had a colonoscopy yesterday and Mary made it back to town, just in time to take him. He’s doing fine. His doctor does one when you turn 50, no matter what. My doctor says that a simpler test can prevent the need for one. I like my doctor better. He was on a crappy diet for two weeks before the procedure and still had to drink the bottle. Anyway, he was back to work today.
My friend in the Phoenix hospital is still recovering, only a little bit each day. She has been in the hospital almost a month and it is taking its toll on the family. Some adult children just can’t accept the illness of their mom. From the news I get, the two oldest boys have been the center of the drama. This lady is Julius’ sister and he called today to update me. Seems his boss won’t give him much time off and when she finally approves leave, she places a lot of guilt on him. I never understood that when I was working. If the employee had the leave, I let them use it. If they didn’t, I let them use leave without pay. From my point of view, an employee with a family crisis isn’t going to be doing a top notch job anyway and family is always important. I did have a few who abused that philosophy and had to deal with that—some people seem to live their entire life with drama and that is a problem. Another reason to be happy I’m retired.
The more I read about the Wisconsin battle, the more angry I get. One really needs to listen to parts of the bill that haven’t made the mainstream news. Now I learn it has a provision that certain power plants can be sold without a bidding process. How does that save money? Police and Fire Fighters are not being cut and they supported the governor’s bid. The Union leaders have agreed to pension and healthcare changes, the only thing they won’t agree to is shutting off the bargaining issue. Too bad its all about politics.

DID YOU KNOW THAT…
Mustard can be used to treat and cure a sore throat. To use mustard for sore throats combine mustard, the juice of one half of a fresh lemon, one tablespoon of salt, one tablespoon of honey, and one half cup of boiling water. Mix the ingredients thoroughly. Let the mixture set for 15 minutes. Gargle your throat. This will cure a sore throat in three days. For added benefit, put one cap of mouthwash into the mix before gargling.
Place fabric softener sheets in your dresser drawers and in your closets this will keep your clothes and linens smelling fresh for several weeks. I also put a fabric softener sheet under my trash bag to help keep the trash can from smelling of unpleasant odors.
SOMEWHAT USELESS INFORMATION…
There was an attempt in 1968 to officially name this day Presidents Day. However, this suggestion died in committee. Many states, however, choose to call their own celebration on this day "Presidents Day."
On February 22nd of almost every year since 1888, Washington's Farewell Address has been read in the US Senate. While this does not happen on Presidents Day, it is an annual celebration of Washington's Birthday that stems from 1862 when the Address was read as a way to boost morale during the Civil War.
Abraham Lincoln's birthday is on February 12th. Even though many states celebrate Abraham Lincoln's birthday concurrently with Washington's birthday, it is not a federally designated holiday.

UNUSUAL NEWS ITEM… WARREN, MI.
— Warren police said a man has been charged after he told a store clerk he didn't have to pay for cigarettes because he was a king.
Joseph Lawrence Borowiak is charged with strong-arm robbery and resisting arrest after being accused of threatening a 7-Eleven store clerk on Saturday.
Police said Borowiak went into the store at about 6:30 a.m. and asked the clerk for a pack of cigarettes. Borowiak told the clerk he wasn't going to pay for the cigarettes because he was a king and didn't have to, police said. He tried to grab the cigarettes, swung at the clerk and then ran out, police said.
A witness in the store was able to direct police to the area where Borowiak had last been seen walking. Police said he did not immediately surrender when they found him in front a funeral home further down Schoenherr Road and officers used a Taser on him to quell him.
Police said Borowiak has a criminal history that includes a cocaine possession conviction.
A LITTLE LAUGH…
An acquaintance of mine was hired as a research assistant by the physics department of a West Coast university to investigate the thermodynamic properties of wood. Two weeks after starting work he was approached by an encyclopedia salesman who explained that purchase of the encyclopedia entitled the buyer to have any three special questions answered completely. To save himself a great deal of work, the researcher bought the encyclopedia, stipulating for his first free question a full dissertation on the thermodynamic properties of wood.
Three weeks later the head of the physics department called the research assistant into his office and said, "We have a request from an encyclopedia company. One of their customers has asked for a report on the thermodynamic properties of wood. Please prepare the report for them."
