Columbus Day has seemed like a strange holiday for me for 40years.
I am not Italian. When I was in school, I learned that ol’ poem--In 1492,
Columbus sailed the ocean blue…-- Much later I learned that Leif Erickson was
probably here much earlier…I’m not Scandinavian either. Then 40 years ago as we
approached a 3 day weekend on Navajo, I realized that many people were here
when any ‘discovery’ happened. The Indigenous People back then greeted the
Europeans for the most part with a welcoming hand. The standing Rez story was
that Columbus Day is when the Indigenous People found a very lost, pale white
guy on their shores. Now that the US is getting tough on immigration of
non-white people, lots of Native People have made new poster—A picture of
chiefs standing together with this: IMIGRATION Illegals has always been a
problem in the US—Ask any Native American. Or the same picture with HOMELAND
SECURITY Fighting terrorism since 1492. It is unfortunate that the vast
majority of Americans just don’t get it. I saw a picture on FB that I think
explains why. It’s time to recognize the Natives with their own Federal
Holiday.
I had a long talk with my brother today. I
learned that his new showroom is HIS designs for furniture. He designs, sends
the pics to Vietnam, they make the furniture. He works for them. That explains
why the new showroom is called “Frazier”. Turns out he wanted to name is “Sumner”,
my father’s and my middle name. The company wouldn’t do that, but one of the
pieces is named ‘Sumner’—it’s a small wine table. Can’t wait to see it. Lots of
exciting stuff happening for him. Laura is still on her business trip…this week
is still China. She is having a great time and picking up a lot of business. Things
are looking up.

It Really Happened
.
In a small Texas town, (Mt. Vernon) the owner of Drummond’s Bar
began construction on a new building to increase his business.. The local
Baptist church started a campaign to block the bar from opening with petitions
and prayers. Work progressed right up till the week before opening when
lightning struck the bar and it burned to the ground.
Afterward, the church folks became rather smug in their outlook,
until the bar owner sued the church on the grounds that the church was
ultimately responsible for the demise of his building, either through direct or
indirect actions or means.
The church vehemently denied all responsibility or any connection
to the building's demise in its reply to the court.
As the case made its way into court, the judge looked over the
paperwork. At the hearing he commented, “I don't know how I’m going to decide
this, but as it appears from the paperwork, we have a bar owner who believes in
the power of prayer, and an entire church congregation that does not.”

A musical director was having a lot of trouble with one drummer.
He talked and talked and talked with the drummer, but his performance simply
didn't improve.
Finally, before the whole orchestra, he said, "When a
musician just can't handle his instrument and doesn't improve when given help,
they take away the instrument, and give him two sticks, and make him a
drummer."
A stage whisper was heard
from the percussion section: "And if he can't handle even that, they take
away one of his sticks and make him a conductor."
