In
1582, the Gregorian calendar, which marks January 1 as the new year, is adopted
by the Roman Catholic Church.

"Auld
Lang Syne" was written by Scottish poet Robert Burns in 1788. He may have
based it on a folk song. The words auld lang syne mean "times gone
by".

first rooftop celebration atop One Times Square, a fireworks display, took place
in 1904 and was produced by The New York Times to inaugurate their new
headquarters in Times Square and celebrate the renaming of Longacre Square to
Times Square.

first ball dropping celebration atop One Times Square was held on December 31,
1907. In 1942 and 1943 the ball lowering was suspended due to the wartime

Woke
up to a clear sky and cold temps…must be January. There was only about 3” of the forecasted 6”
of snow and it was a very dry snow. Darn. I didn’t go anywhere yesterday so this
morning I went out to clear the car windows. I had my scraper, my gloves, etc.
Only to discover that the snow could be just brushed off with no residue on the
windows, so went back inside and got the snow broom. Bam! Entire car cleaned in
3 minutes flat. The storm we had just before this one was a wet one. When I
went out to clear the windows I had snow and ¼” solid ice on the windshield.
That was no 3-minute job.
For
those who think the shut-down is no big deal since Federal Employees always get
paid for days not working during the shutdown, think about the trickledown
effect. Those working as contract workers don’t get paid back. Vendors who run
concessions at National Parks, Monuments, etc. do get paid back. Visitors to
many government facilities find them closed…after saving up for a vacation.
Landlords, Mortgage companies, grocery stores, don’t offer credit. And the work
is just piling up. This is a real mess and needs to be fixed as soon as
possible.
My
New Year’s Eve was quiet. Roads were icy so no one came over, & I didn’t go
anywhere. I watched the ball drop in NYC at 10p here and went to bed. I decided
I didn’t have to wait until midnight to watch the calendar change on my phone.
When I got up this morning the phone said it was Jan. 1, 2019, so I guess
things went as planned.
