Free Rambling Thoughts

I had a good La Fonda
lunch with Cheryl today. Mary has gone to Oregon to be with her mom in her last
days. So hard to lose a parent. Cheryl is having a good time buying new
clothes. That is nice.
I’ve almost got all my
stuff laid out…tomorrow is laundry day so I can pack on Saturday. Got my cash
today. I have to say I was very surprised how well I was treated at Wells
Fargo. I have to get small bills and they have to be in good shape. Arab countries
will take no bills that are torn, have pen marks, or anything defacing. When I
told the young lady I needed bills that were in good shape, she said “Oh, are
you going to Africa?” I asked how she knew and she said they have several
customers who travel there regularly and always ask for clean bills. She went
through every bill--$400 in ones, fives and tens. We pulled unacceptable bills
and she got other ones. So easy and so friendly. I only have my ‘travel money’
at Wells Fargo so don’t go there that often. Nice to see a big bank with good
customer service.
This is Homecoming
weekend here for NAU. Back in the day the whole town got behind Homecoming with
every store decorating in blue and gold. The parade was a big deal and moved
from the campus to downtown with people lining the parade route. Our local
paper had a good editorial on how things have changed. They say that back in
the day, our small town’s biggest parade was Homecoming. I believe that the Pow
Wow parade was bigger, but can’t say for sure. The paper says that as Flagstaff
has grown to 65,000+, the University is now only one of many groups that have
events for the town. I think it is more the National chain store glut we have
that has driven so many local businesses out of business. Local store owners
either went to NAU or had kids at NAU and Homecoming was a big deal, now it’s
just minimum wage sales people who work at the National Chains and the chains
don’t want to put up the $$$ for decorations and window painting. Sad to see
tradition die out. When I lived in Boulder, during my undergrad years I spent a
pretty penny at local businesses that were near campus. I’m sure the NAU
students do the same thing. Go Jacks!!!

Yeah, It Really Happened .
FORT PIERCE, Fla. -
Police in Florida said they arrested a man on a theft charge after he allegedly
stole an ice cream sandwich by concealing it in his pants.
Fort Pierce police said
an assistant manager at the Family Dollar store saw a man take something from a
cooler and leave the store without paying Oct. 12, TCPalm.com reported Monday.
"She watched him as
he walked across the street to the Dollar Tree store, as he walked he removed
an ice cream sandwich from the front of his pants and began eating it," the
arrest report states. "He then entered the Dollar Tree and came out a few
minutes later with a drink and then began to walk west on Georgia Avenue."
Police found Robert
Silva, 32, while he was walking with a beverage. He told officers he stole the
ice cream treat because his car had blown a tire near the store and he was only
carrying $3.
The suspect said
"he was sorry," the report states. Silva was arrested on a charge of
misdemeanor theft.
