Wave
Jumping in Brazil: If you’re heading off to one of the biggest New Year’s Eve
bashes in the world, make sure you’re in on Brazil’s most important traditions.
Some of the craziest parties in this South American country happen on the
beautiful beaches of Rio de Janeiro. Don’t be alarmed when you see party-goers
out in the water jumping over waves at night. Brazilians say that jumping over
one wave each time you make a New Year’s wish (seven waves total) will increase
your good luck and your wishes will come true. Besides wave jumping, another
popular tradition is wearing a primarily white outfit for luck. Be sure to pack
your swimwear and your white party outfit when you head to the beautiful
Copacabana Beach to ring in the new year.
Smashing Dishes in
Denmark: If you’re visiting this Scandinavian country for the holiday, be sure
to wear some close-toed shoes. In Denmark, it is tradition to smash plates on
your neighbors’ houses as a sign of affection. These plates are thrown after
midnight for good luck and whoever has the largest pile in the morning is said
to have the most loyal friends. Similarly, in the Netherlands, Dutch children
bring a small pile of broken pottery to their neighbors’ doorsteps with the
same intent. If you’re looking to smash some plates, downtown Copenhagen is a
beautiful city to spend your New Year’s Eve. The heart of the city boasts
fireworks, great food and beautifully decorated buildings — just be sure to
watch your step for broken pottery.

True Things
This
love affair gone wrong happened in Chesapeake, Va. where Dylan Fell arranged to
meet the woman he was dating in a McDonald's parking lot.
Moments
after the two met, a Portsmouth police officer arrived.
"She
got in. About two minutes into it, a blue car pulled in behind me to block me
in, and I looked in the rear-view mirror, and I said, 'Who is that?' And she
said, 'Oh, that's my husband,'" says Fell.
He
says he thought his date was separated from her husband, and surely didn't know
the husband was an officer. But what happened led to charges and a complaint
against police Sergeant Robert Huntington.
Fell
says the sergeant tried to yank him out of his truck and arrest him for no
reason.
"By
that time, he reached through the window with both hands and grabs my shirt and
tries to pull me out this window. When he had grip of me, he took his left hand
and hit me in my crotch, reaches for what I thought was a gun and I'm scared
for my life and I take off," says Fell.
Hours
later, Dylan filed an assault report with Chesapeake police and then went to
Portsmouth police to file an internal affairs complaint.
Sergeant
Huntington is now facing assault charges but is still working for the
department.

My Sometimes-Long-winded Thoughts
I didn’t make it to Midnight…but the new year thankfully came without
me making sure. It was a very chilly night.
The Census Bureau missed the deadline for reporting state totals,
necessary for redistricting. The law was passed in 1976 and this is the first
time it hasn’t met the deadline. The administration is responsible.
Over 1100 casino workers on the Navajo Reservation have been laid off
due to Covid. They have been closed since March. Now there is talk that some
casinos may never reopen. Sad.
I get that emergency funds should be more directed to those in need.
It seems to me that Congress had plenty of time to develop a better way to
distribute funds to needy Americans. For those that have not lost wages during
the pandemic, the first stimulus check was a nice bonus. For those without jobs
it was a drop in the bucket. Congress has been working on a second stimulus
since the first bill passed and now, all these months later, they still give
everyone ½ of the pittance money from the first check. I guess their developing
a better plan was interfering with their campaigning and vacation time.
Disappointed.
