Do you know the oldest city in the
United States? It's not a city from the original 13 colonies. It's not Boston,
Philadelphia, or even Jamestown, Virginia. The oldest city in the United States
is Saint Augustine, Florida.
The Spanish explorer Pedro
Menendez de Aviles established a settlement there in 1565. de Aviles reached
shore on August 28, the feast day of St. Augustine, and decided to name the
city accordingly. To be fair, though, it was controlled by the Spanish, and
then the British, and then the Spanish again, before it was technically
American. The United States acquired the region by treaty in 1821.

Refer to Indigenous
traditional clothing as regalia, not a 'costume'....
Avoid the 'how much Indian
are you' questions....
Refrain from saying that
your Great Great Grandparent was:
a Cherokee Princess, an
Indian 'Chief', Squanto, or Pocahontas....
Avoid interrupting,
especially with Elders..

My Rambling Thoughts
Late
night with Netflix last night, so I’m just lazy today. It is nice outside and I
took a short walk in the neighborhood.
An
NAU Homecoming tradition weakened by Covid. Tequila Sunrise has been a
tradition since the 1970’s. Bars near the University open at 6a. Lots of
drinking, some arrests, some bad behavior. Many in Flag have tried, with little
success to curb the tradition. Well, it is 2020 so everything changes. This
year the bars will not open until noon. There is no football game for
homecoming. No parade. One can only hope that Tequila Sunrise finally ends.
While
the Trump administration is working to keep their boss in power, they are busy
behind the news coverage changing America. They have cut public comment to 30
days…it has been 60 days for decades. The Labor Dept. is changing regulatory
rules that will affect all workers. Homeland, EPA, and Transportation are
burning the midnight oil to get regulations dropped or watered down. No matter
the results of the election, they will change our country for decades to come.
And to add more fire…at his rallies they are chanting ‘Lock her up’ has
returned with no facts to back it up.
Broncos
beat the Pats after the postponed games. Good for them. I could only watch it
on the internet since our cable company didn’t have the game. The Cards and
Cowboys play tomorrow night.
