My Rambling Thoughts

Tuesday is becoming a windy day. Expecting 40+mph this afternoon. I'm skipping my forest walk.

Talked to a few friends yesterday and this morning on the phone. Everyone is doing well. Everyone is tired of the stay-at-home thing. Mary had a good Mother's Day. Both her son and daughter sent her free meals that can be delivered. Her daughter sent her 2 meals from her favorite local restaurant, and her son got her 4 meals to cook from Blue Apron. Nice. Salsa Brava, the local restaurant gave her enough of their in-house made chips and salsa for an army along with the meals.

Yesterday afternoon Pine Ridge Reservation had 2 COVID-19 cases in the Wounded Knee District. The council met and shut down the reservation for 72 hours beginning at 7pm yesterday. No one is to leave their home. They don't mess around up there.

My Rambling Thoughts

There was a nice female rain last night for at least a couple of hours. Sidewalks were still wet at 7am. It was a much needed rain and was greatly appreciated.

South Dakota's governor is in a battle with two tribes, Pine Ridge and Cheyenne River. Both tribes set up checkpoints on their reservations. Treaties and sovereignty give them control ON their reservations. The checkpoints were set up and take about a minute to fill out a form. Vehicles with legitimate business [medical, food, …] are permitted. Vehicles of non-residents are detoured around either reservation. The tribes are attempting, successfully, of keeping COVID-19 off their respective reservations. The governor of the State of South Dakota does not agree. She also doesn't seem to understand sovereignty of Natives. She has ordered that the checkpoints be removed. The tribes, with the help of a Federal judge, have refused. Hopefully this will remain in the courts and that the ignorant governor does not call in the National Guard. Good for the tribes for protecting their people.

An update from the Navajo Nation: There are over 3100 positive cases. This is the highest per capita in the US.

Everyday for the past couple of weeks, a tow truck has been driving through our parking lot. I've only seen them two one vehicle, but they return daily. Finally figured it out what is going on. Today a couple of guys were walking around changing the signs in the parking area. Our HOA has gotten a new towing company. The new signs have their name and phone number. Also list prices: Non-commercial vehicles without a permit: $195 + $35/day; Commercial vehicles without a permit: $250 + $45/day. I have lived here over a decade and have never had a problem parking close to my front door, with or without these Draconian policies. I should add that both of my closest neighbors have 3 vehicles each with parking permits. The extra permit cost each of them $85.

Cloudy Sunday, maybe some rain...sure hope so. Just got an alert on my phone that lightning is close. Really hoping for some rain.

I sure enjoyed reading all the Mother's Day posts on Facebook. I miss my mom, but she had a nice life of 89 years. The only time she ever lived alone was after my dad passed. She lived with her parents, got married at 19, stayed with her parents during 'The War', and then with my dad. She adjusted well to living alone, but one day decided to move into a retirement community. She had a 1 bedroom apartment but ate in the dining room and took advantage of all the social gathering. She had a good life.

During this pandemic, I sometimes forget that there are thousands of border detainees being held in cages. Just saw an article that AZ is still holding hearings for its juvenile (4-17 year old) detainees. All hearings are now done by video conference while the detainee is in detention and the judge, wearing a mask is miles away in an empty courtroom. The judge determines if the case is dismissed, postponed, or the juvenile is deported. One judge did 17 cases in 2 hours. Most detainees do not have a lawyer, a few have a lawyer on the phone but not part of the video conference. Our government moved to not allow a lawyer on a phone. Thankfully it was overruled. The only part of the hearing that is directly translated to the child are the direct questions and answers. The other parts of the hearing procedures are not translated for the child. At the present time there are 94,000 minors awaiting a court hearing. THERE HAS TO BE A BETTER WAY.
