Random Tidbits

The term "opera" comes from the Latin opus, or "work."

Opera was the fruit of the Italian Renaissance. In the final decade of the sixteenth century, a group of artists, musicians, and poets who called themselves the Florentine Camerata met there to revive Greek drama and developed an opera in musica: a work in music. Galileo's father, Vincenzo Galilei was reportedly a member.

Presidential Trivia

JFK donated his entire salary to charity.

Many aspects of JFK's life have been analyzed through popular books, movies, among other ways. But one thing that's not often mentioned is that while he was in office, he donated his entire congressional and presidential salaries to charity. He made more than enough money through his family's trusts, so he didn't particularly need the income.

Lyndon B. Johnson is the only president to be sworn in on an airplane.

When LBJ took the oath of office shortly after Kennedy's assassination, it was notable for several reasons. He's the only president to ever be sworn in on an airplane, and the only one to be sworn in by a woman, Judge Sarah T. Hughes. Also notable was the fact the Jackie Kennedy stood by his side for the swearing-in, with blood still on her coat.

Richard Nixon had many talents.

While he certainly isn't remembered as the best politician, he is known for his many other talents outside of the Oval Office. Nixon knew how to play five instruments, was an avid bowler, and a huge football fan.

Gerald Ford could have been a professional football player.

Ford could have taken a very different path as an NFL player instead of becoming a politician. When he graduated from the University of Michigan in 1935, he received offers from Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers but turned them both down to study law and coach football at Yale.

My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

Not sure what was going on with my computer/internet yesterday. All better today.

Yesterday my dental cleaning/checkup went well. Not sure what is going on with the Dr. I had to sign a paper that if I canceled an appointment less than 24 hours before the appointment, there would be a $150 charge. He must have raised his rates also because last cleaning/checkup was $62 after insurance…this time the receptionist said it would be $220 after insurance. I always pay at the time but told her to bill me. If the cost is correct, I’m looking for a new dentist.

I really enjoy a nice grilled cheese sandwich, but do not enjoy standing at the stove to make it. I checked the internet machine and found a way to do it with my air fryer. It only takes 10 minutes, and I flipped it after 5 minutes. It was great!

I was shocked to hear about the increase in Asian American assaults, especially in CA and NY. In New York the 2020 rate increased 869%. Crazies are blaming them for Covid. That is so sad.

Today I finally got a haircut. I haven’t gotten one since early December. I feel a lot lighter and enjoy it.

New evidence suggests that Stonehenge was originally built in Wales and moved 169 miles to its current location…on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England. The placing of stones was a monumental feat. Moving it that far makes it much more enticing. New evidence shows that both sites were lined with the equinox. WOW!

I texted a great Focus Traveler from Texas to be sure she and her family were OK. She texted back that she has power and water on her ranch. Her adult son and her adult daughter live in Austin. They do not have power or water but are OK. She is a retired principal and we shared great education stories when we travel with Focus. Glad she and her family are OK.

I missed the Focus Annual Blowout via the internet yesterday. Ellie sent me the information so I will post it tomorrow.

Random Tidbits

Presidents Day is an American holiday celebrated on the third Monday in February. Originally established in 1885 in recognition of President George Washington, it is still officially called "Washington's Birthday" by the federal government. Traditionally celebrated on February 22--Washington's actual day of birth--the holiday became popularly known as Presidents' Day after it was moved as part of 1971's Uniform Monday Holiday Act, an attempt to create more three-day weekends for the nation's workers. Many states still choose to call their own celebration on this day "Presidents' Day."

Presidential Trivia

Warren Harding had unique nicknames.

Legend has it that Harding's mother wanted to name him Winfield>>>P, but when she didn't get her way, she found a loophole by giving him the nickname"Winny." Some folks also called him"Sonny."

Calvin Coolidge was born on Independence Day.

Sometimes a person's birthday seems unusually significant. Case in point: Coolidge was born on July 4>>>P. But you probably wouldn't see him getting too wild and crazy at his birthday party — he was notoriously quiet, earning the nickname"Silent Cal."

Herbert Clark Hoover was the first president born in a Western state.

Previous presidents were all born in the Eastern part of the county, but Hoover was the first to be born west of the Mississippi. He grew up in the very small town of West Branch, Iowa, and reportedly never even crossed the Mississippi until he was 22 years old.

My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

I woke up to a little over an inch of snow. It was overcast. By 9a the sun was shining. I went to get a mani-pedi at 11am. This dry winter has played havoc on my fingernails so I also did them today. When I got out at 12Noon, it was overcast and a little snow. Five minutes after I got home, the sky was clear and sunny again. Crazy weather.

Thankfully at 7000’ we are getting moisture and tolerable temperatures. Most of the country is frozen solid, dealing with once in a century snowfall, power outages, and accident- closed highways. I am fortunate.

I got a suspicious email this morning. It claimed to be from Norton Security telling me that my checking account had been charged $649 for their services. I don’t have Norton, I use another security. I called the number and foreign guy told me I could cancel my account as soon as he removed the software from my computer. I’m not a real geek, but even I know that any subscription will automatically stop working if the software isn’t renewed. I hung up, saved the email in case my bank account has an issue. I hate these companies that try and scam me.

Presidential Trivia

Theodore Roosevelt gave a speech right after being shot.

Teddy Roosevelt was one tough guy. Need proof? He was shot at close range shortly before giving a campaign speech in 1912, but instead of heading straight to the hospital, he stayed there to give his planned speech — with the bullet still lodged in his body.

William Howard Taft never got stuck in a bathtub.

Popular legend would have you believe that Taft is the president who got stuck in a White House bathtub, but that's actually not true. However, he did have an embarrassing bathtub incident at a hotel in New Jersey. The bath water displaced by his body flooded the floor in his room and trickled onto the heads of guests in the downstairs dining room.

Woodrow Wilson was the first president to give an address using broadcast radio.

Although Wilson was obviously used to public speaking, he was reportedly very anxious about giving his the "first live, remote, nationwide radio broadcast," in which he honored the anniversary of Armistice Day and outlined a vision for America.

My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

Clouds are assembling across the sky. Precipitation expected tomorrow. Not a lot, but every little bit helps.

One of my doctors wanted a little more blood. Went to the hospital and had a good experience. The tech from the last visit was friendly and courteous. She even called me by my first name. She even looked down at the floor and said it took a couple of hours to clean up the dry blood. The blood draw was quick, and I was out of there, wishing both ladies a great week.

The GOP is not a happy bunch right now.  It looks like any party member in power who did not fully support Trump since the election can expect to be censured by their state party. The numbers keep growing. Sad.

‘1A’ on NPR had a great review of the current Mars missions. The US has a rover that will land and be able to actually bring back samples in a couple of years. Previous US missions only allowed computers on board the rover to gather data. When the samples are bought back, for the first time in human history, many humans will be able to touch Mars Rocks. WOW! In addition to the US Rover, China and the UAE are currently in orbit around Mars, preparing to land their own equipment. Cool.
