My Rambling Thoughts
Another rainy…snowy…windy day. Winter seems to be returning for a
few days. I awoke this morning to actual snow covering most of the ground. Not
that unusual for Flagstaff, but still a surprise.
Our discussion group goes tonight. Interesting readings that show
the positive and negative of the Obama administration regarding the continent
of Africa. Most Africans were excited when he was elected as he had such a
strong connection to Kenya…with his father being born there. Many hopes were
dashed when US policy didn’t follow through with several Obama promises regarding
aid. China has been busy for over a decade in sending money for infrastructure
projects that bring many jobs while much of US aid has been to search out
terrorists. Interesting discussion awaits.
Mother’s Day after my mom passed is a time for memories. Most are
happy memories of her doing everything she could to make her sons lives better.
Still miss her a lot.

100 YEARS AGO-1915
Flagstaff Dairyman Fred Garing, Proprietor, is the only Coconino
County dairy that has completely complied with all the state regulations
concerning the sale of milk. His fresh milk and cream are guaranteed to come
only from tuberculin-tested cows. Extra clean, Extra expense, Extraordinary
care makes the difference.
Street Superintendent Moritz has commenced some worthy
improvements to City Park. The rocks have been piled artistically and ivy
planted in the hope they will be covered by fall. The whole park is cleaned
from rubbish. Allen Compton, Councilman, has donated two swings. More
donations are hoped for.
This past April was the wettest since 1903 with a total of 3.60
inches falling upon Flagstaff.

CIENEGA
SPRINGS, AZ (UPI) - Authorities in Arizona responding to a report of human remains
in the Colorado River said they actually discovered a staged "underwater
skeleton tea party." The La Paz County Sheriff's Department said deputies
received a report Monday from a Colorado River snorkeler who spotted what
appeared to be human remains near the Cienega Springs boat launch. A Buckskin
Fire Department diver investigated with a video camera and discovered the
reported remains were actually a pair of fake skeletons in lawn chairs having
what the sheriff's department described as an "underwater skeleton tea
party." "Although the call itself was resource intensive, both the
Sheriff's Office and Buckskin Fire were happy to find that the remains weren't
real and thanked the reporting party for making the call," the department
said.

REDMOND, Wash. (UPI) - Microsoft quietly
released a distinct new website this week called How-Old.net that uses facial
recognition software to guess your age. It's not always right, but it sure
makes for a fun way to kill time on the Internet.
At Thursday's Microsoft Build 2015 developer conference, Microsoft officially
introduced the site to promote what it's been up to behind the scenes, Business
Insider reports. It intends to use similar software to build smarter
applications that recognize even slight features in a person's face.
Site engineers Corom Thompson and Santosh Balasubramanian said about the
surprise launch, "We sent email to a group of several hundred people
asking them to try the page for a few minutes and give us feedback --
optimistically hoping that at least 50 people would give it a shot ...We were
shocked. Within a few hours, over 35,000 users had hit the page from all over
the world."
The site uses loads of data to intelligently guess a person's gender age from a
photo under 3MB in size, but it isn't always right.
The app reportedly learns over time, making closer guesses as more users upload
and add to the data pool. Essentially, participants take part in training the
software, although it's more like a game than an exercise. Many have taken to
Twitter to share screenshots of their funny How-Old.net guesses.
