Thoughts for the day

The weather is setting records for high temps. Our area needs moisture, but this is very nice.

The wealth of our country is not just money. It has to do with our drive to form a more perfect union. At least Trump has paused the tariffs to Mexico for 30 days. I hope the 10,000 Mexican troops help with the drug trafficking across the southern border. I also hope Canada finds a way to stop the new US tariffs.

Mary got good new…she doesn’t have A-fib. She meets with a new surgeon on Thursday to discuss her ankle surgery.

Mayan Culture of Mexico and beyond…

Today, their sacrifices look a little different.

Some things have changed when it comes to the present-day Maya, however. While blood sacrifice is still an important part of their culture, today the sacrifices take the form of chickens — not humans. 

Blood sacrifice is still practiced among the direct descendants of the Maya who are found in Mexico and Central America.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin: ‘Brew City’

Milwaukee has a long and illustrious brewing history dating back to the mid-19th century when Schlitz Brewing Company opened, although the term ‘Brew City’ only became popular in the 1980s when it was used to encourage tourism. Today there are over 40 brewing companies operating in the city including big names like MillerCoors as well as a whole host of smaller microbreweries. The city’s lively dive bar scene offers plenty of opportunities to sample both classic brews and more contemporary flavors.

The ground hog saw his shadow here, so 6 more weeks of winter. Note: The Punxsutawney Phil prediction is accurate about 30% of the time.

Trump is fulfilling his campaign promises. I hope those who voted for him are ready for all that is ahead. When I was attending Univ. of Colorado, I got to hear John Kenneth Galbraith speak during ‘World Affairs Week’.  He introduced me to the tariff concept. The concept has been around since the Middle Ages. They seldom work to the benefit of the one placing the tariff.

The families of both plane crashes are grieving as they wait for true reason the planes stopped flying.

Mayan Culture of Mexico and beyond…

The Mayan people still exist today.

When you hear stories of ancient cultures, you tend to think of them as only existing in the past. While the Mayan empire was at its height centuries ago, the Mayan people, language and customs carry on into the present day. 

It is estimated that there are about 6 million Mayan people living today, the majority of whom live in Mexico.

Origin of city nicknames…

 Miami, Florida: ‘Magic City’

It’s been suggested that Miami gained its nickname because of its rapid growth, becoming a city almost overnight as if 'by magic'. In fact, the moniker stems from an article in Henry Flagler’s East Coast Homeseeker magazine. In 1896 Flagler, who was also the founder of the Florida East Coast Railway and a major developer of the region, hired a writer named E.V. Blackman to write a 'strong, positive story' to lure northerners southward. In his article Blackman, who had never even seen Miami, lauded it as 'The Magic City', and the name stuck.
