Free Rambling Thoughts
Nice cool Saturday. I had visitors from the Rez last night…great to catch up. It also reminds me how grateful I am that I am retired. Trying to fit travel into a couple of weeks in the summer just isn’t for me anymore.

I’m looking forward to the London Olympics. Our local cable has added a few channels that might turn out to be interesting…if not too expensive. I was surprised, and a little naive I guess, when I found out the Team USA uniforms were made in China. I get the global economy thing, and the recession thing. It just seems to be an odd message for the US Olympic honchos to be sending. While in Kenya recently we were talking to our guide about Kenya runners on the world stage. He told us that these world class runners, both male and female were all cousins.  Turns out he meant they were all from one small tribe and related as cousins, much like so many Native tribes in the US name ‘cousins’, not by the direct blood relation so common in Anglo society. It is always enjoyable to watch the top athletes participate in their chosen sport.  I look forward to the back stories of many of the athletes. I will always remember the summer Olympics, as I was traveling in Scotland during much of the games. We didn’t have a lot of time for TV, but were able to catch a lot of highlights before crashing at night or getting up early before we started out. Being in Scotland, the highlights were about Scottish and other UK country athletes with very little on American athletes. It was a good lesson in perspective for all my travels…and my life. The countdown to London Olympics has begun to the Opening Ceremony…one of the few ‘one-upmanship’ events I enjoy…the music, the march in, the lighting of the torch…always awesome, always different, and always the same!

Joke-of-the-day
This guy was pulled over for running a stop sign. When the cop checked the man's driver's license, he said, "You're wearing glasses on your ID and you're not now. I'm going to have to give you a ticket."The guy said, "Officer, I have contacts."The cop said, "Look, buddy, I don't care who you know, ... I'm giving you a ticket."
Rules of Thumb
Easy shortcuts to make an ‘educated’ guess
Oersted's rule: Hold right hand with the fingertips in the direction of current. The line shall be between the magnet and the palm. Magnet north pole will then turn to the thumb side. Named for Hans Christian Ørsted (often rendered Oersted in English; 14 August 1777 – 9 March 1851), a Danish physicist and chemist who discovered that electric currents create magnetic fields, an important aspect of electromagnetism
Yeah, It Really Happened
TONAWANDA, N.Y. - A battle between neighbors in western New York intensified when one woman put a pair of fake testicles in her back yard. Shirley Draper, of Tonawanda, put the fake testicles in her yard in June, The Tonawanda (N.Y.) News reported Thursday. Her neighbor, Peter Diliberto, called the Tonawanda Police Department June 27 to complain about the lawn ornament, but was told the police could not handle the issue, as displaying fake testicles is not considered illegal.
In response, Diliberto and his wife took a picture of Draper's fake testicles and made a laminated yard sign that points to Draper's yard. Draper tried to rip the picture out of the Dilibertos' yard July 4, police Lt. Nick Bado said. She wasn't arrested at that time, but will be served criminal summons for fourth-degree criminal mischief and trespassing.

All ‘data’ info is from the internet sites and is usually checked with at least one other source, but I have learned that every site has mistakes and sadly once out the information is out there, many sites simply copy it and is therefore difficult to verify. Also for events occurring before the Gregorian calendar was adopted [1582] the dates may not be totally accurate.
