How many can you identify…answers in Today’s Birthdays

Free Rambling Thoughts
The rain came and cooled everything off nicely. It was a light rain, but lasted for several hours. So nice to live in Flagstaff.

Well, Romney sure surprised a lot of people today—first by announcing his VP choice on a Saturday with most people watching the Olympics—and second by choosing very conservative Paul Ryan. I much more enjoyed all the Olympics than any of the immediate lining up for or against his choice.

I did some bedroom cleaning today, flipped the mattress, washed the mattress pad, put on clean sheets…worth the extra work. The bed will feel very nice tonight.

While cruizin the Internet machine I found another website…unusual facts. You’ll see it below.

Unusal Fact of the Day
The first bumper stickers appeared prior to World War II and usually promoted political candidates. At that time, they weren’t adhesive-backed; they were affixed to the car bumper with wire.

Joke-of-the-day
Through the pitch-black night, the captain sees a light dead ahead on a collision course with his ship. He sends a signal: “Change your course 10 degree east.”The light signals back: “Change yours, 10 degrees west.”Angry, the captain sends: “I’m a navy captain! Change your course, sir!”“I’m a seaman, second class,” comes the reply. “Change your course, sir.”Now the captain is furious. “I’m a battleship! I’m not changing course!” There is one last reply. “I’m a lighthouse. Your call.”

UNDERSTANDING MODERN FRENCH PHILOSOPHY
To understand modern French philosophy, simply assume that everything intangible is real, while everything material is unreal. Thus, disappointment is real, but your Citroen is not.
Yeah, It Really Happened
CHARLOTTETOWN, Prince Edward Island - A naked and drunk Canadian inmate doing a cartoon impersonation dance unintentionally showed jail guards a plastic bag containing drugs hidden in his backside. The man had been arrested while cavorting on a street with a beer in one hand and a cheeseburger in the other in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, The National Post reported.
Jail officers suspected the man had also ingested drugs, so he was ordered to undress in a cell for observation. The man reportedly asked guards if they were familiar with the animated character Cyril Sneer, an evil pink aardvark. Court heard he then tucked his genitals between his legs, bent over and began dancing like the character moves, the report said. During his performance, guards noticed a piece of plastic protruding from his bottom. It was found to contain four doses of the powerful painkiller Hydromorphone, guards said. Troy Campbell pleaded guilty to drug possession and was fined $805, the report said.
Somewhat Useless Information
  • Golf club names rarely used in the game today include baffy (a four wood), brassie (a two wood), cleek (a two iron), mashie (a five iron), niblick (an eight iron), and spoon (a three wood).
  • Jack Nicklaus's nickname, "The Golden Bear," has nothing to do with his blonde hair and stocky build. He earned it while playing golf in high school for the Upper Arlington (Ohio) Golden Bears.
  • Before good-quality synthetic materials were developed, the "carpet" at miniature golf courses was typically made from green-dyed felt made from goat hair.
  • In most of the world, scoring a two on a par-five hole is called an albatross; in the United States, it's known as a double eagle.
  • Althea Gibson was a multisport star who not only became the first African American woman to compete in tennis at Wimbledon but also the first to join the Ladies' Professional Golfing Association.
  • Bing Crosby decided against the role of TV detective Columbo, fearing that it would interfere with his true passion: golf. Peter Falk took the job instead.

All ‘data’ info is from the internet sites and is usually checked with at least one other source, but I have learned that every site has mistakes and sadly once out the information is out there, many sites simply copy it and is therefore difficult to verify. Also for events occurring before the Gregorian calendar was adopted [1582] the dates may not be totally accurate.
