Free Rambling Thoughts…
A very nice Sunday…caught up on my weekly news shows, enjoyed the deck for a while this afternoon, waited for rain, but none came…thankfully it was not hot and just cloudy enough.

I have been waiting for several weeks for our HOA to finish its annual landscaping. It hasn’t happened yet, and soon I will have to trim some of the branches on my Blue Spruce and on my bush so I can get into my house. I’ll give them a few more days, as they have put new rocks on half the front yard, and I assume they will be finishing over near me sometime soon.

I did work on my photo contest photos, again for a while today. I’m just about ready to print time, but am hoping I can find a place that will print them from a thumb drive so I can get good quality at a cheaper price than the ink on my computer. Gotta get that done this week, as the picture party is coming up soon.

Joke-of-the-day…
Three old timers chatting at restaurant! They sat down at a table while waiting to be served. One of them said; Hay Jake! Isn’t this your 50th anniversary?
Jake replies! Yep.
Well, the old timer asked, what are you planning on doing? Jake replies, well! I remember taking my wife to Arizona on our 25th anniversary.
The other old timer asked, Oh ya, so what are your plans for your 50th anniversary?
Jake replies, I’m going back to pick her up!!!!!!!
Rules of Thumb…
Easy shortcuts to make an ‘educated’ guess
PLAYING POOL - In a game of eight ball, let your opponent sink half his balls before you sink your first. That way, your balls will interfere with his shooting, but his balls won't be there to interfere with your shooting.
Yeah, It Really Happened…
TULSA, Okla. - An Oklahoma auto shop owner said he has embraced the shop's Irish theme -- and beat the summer heat -- by wearing a kilt to work. David O'Brien, proprietor of O'Brien Auto Performance in Tulsa, said his shop plays Irish jig music during the work day and has a shamrock in its logo, so switching his summer garb from pants to a kilt four years ago seemed like a logical way to cool off in the summer heat, KOTV, Tulsa, Okla., reported Thursday.
"This is physically cooler than shorts," O'Brien said. He said the mode of dress comes with its own challenges. "Keep your knees down and your feet crossed, then everybody's happy and safe," he said. O'Brien said worker David Denney followed his lead and also dons a kilt at work from May to October.
Somewhat Useless Information…
  • The Liberty Bell sounded from the tower of Independence Hall on July 8, 1776, summoning citizens to gather for the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence by Colonel John Nixon.
  • June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress, looking to promote national pride and unity, adopted the national flag. "Resolved: that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation."
  • The first Independence Day celebration west of the Mississippi occurred at Independence Creek and was celebrated by Lewis and Clark in 1805.
  • The origin of Uncle Sam probably began in 1812, when Samuel Wilson was a meat packer who provided meat to the US Army. The meat shipments were stamped with the initials, U.S. Someone joked that the initials stood for "Uncle Sam". This joke eventually led to the idea of Uncle Sam symbolizing the United States government.
  • In 1941, Congress declared 4th of July a federal legal holiday. It is one of the few federal holidays that have not been moved to the nearest Friday or Monday.
  • The 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence did not sign at the same time, nor did they sign on July 4, 1776. The official event occurred on August 2, 1776, when 50 men signed it.

All ‘data’ info is from the internet sites and is usually checked with at least one other source, but I have learned that every site has mistakes and sadly once out the information is out there, many sites simply copy it and is therefore difficult to verify. Also for events occurring before the Gregorian calendar was adopted [1582] the dates may not be totally accurate.
