My Free Rambling Thoughts

A phrase we don’t hear very often in Flag: Is it still raining? So nice to have a couple of hours of light rain here in town. More good news is that the evacuated businesses and residents of Oak Creek Canyon were allowed to return today…after being evacuated about 10 days. More good news—no structures were lost. The bad news is that it will take decades for this area to recover. More bad news is what will be happening when the monsoons arrive. This is an area of steep canyons that have now lost most of their ability to slow down any run off. Flooding is in the future for all those residents and businesses. So sad that this was all human caused.

I had a good lunch and conversation with Cheryl today. She had a very good time in CA at her oldest grandkids graduation. She also got to spend a lot of time with her two youngest ones.

Unusual Fact of the Day

As a tribute to sight-impaired musician Stevie Wonder, original pressings of the Paul McCartney & Wings album Red Rose Speedway included the words "We love you, baby" embossed in Braille.

Heard by Flight Attendants…

“Do they pay for your hotel rooms?” I love this one. Can you imagine if the whole crew was staying in different places and the junior people were grabbing a park bench to sleep on, or couch surfing in their uniforms? Yes, the airline pays for hotels and arranges transportation to and from the hotel. Otherwise, every flight would be late while we figured out where so and so was staying.

Presidential Fun Facts…

FOR TWO YEARS the nation was run by a president and a vice president who were not elected by the people. After Vice President Spiro T. Agnew resigned in 1973, President Nixon appointed Gerald Ford as vice president. Nixon resigned the following year, which left Ford as president, and Ford's appointed vice president, Nelson Rockefeller, as second in line.

THE TERM "First Lady" was used first in 1849 when President Zachary Taylor called Dolley Madison "First Lady" at her state funeral.  It gained popularity in 1877 when used in reference to Lucy Ware Webb Hayes. Most First Ladies, including Jackie Kennedy, are said to have hated the label.

Joke-of-the-day

A suggestion from a Human Resources Manager:

HOW TO PROPERLY PLACE NEW EMPLOYEES . . .

1. Put 400 bricks in a closed room.

2. Put your new hires in the room and close the door.

3. Leave them alone and come back after 6 hours.

4. Then analyze the situation:

a. If they are counting the bricks, put them in the Accounting Department.

b. If they are recounting them, put them in Auditing.

c. If they have messed up the whole place with the bricks, put them in Engineering.

d. If they are arranging the bricks in some strange order, put them in Planning.

e. If they are throwing the bricks at each other, put them in Operations.

f. If they are sleeping, put them in Security.

g. If they have broken the bricks into pieces, put them in Information Technology.

h. If they are sitting idle, put them in Human Resources.

i. If they say they have tried different combinations, they are looking for more, yet not a brick has been moved, put them in Sales.

j. If they have already left for the day, put them in Management.

k. If they are staring out of the window, put them in Strategic Planning.

l. If they are talking to each other, and not a single brick has been moved, congratulate them and put them in Top Management.

Finally, if they have surrounded themselves with bricks in such a way that they can neither be seen nor heard from, put them in Congress.

Yeah, It Really Happened

CEBU CITY, Philippines (UPI) - A zoo in the Philippines has started offering visitors the chance to receive a relaxing 15-minute massage from its four Burmese pythons that it currently has in captivity. The Cebu City Zoo's pythons - Michelle, Walter, EJ and Daniel – are supposedly fed 10 or more chickens before giving out the massages so they won't be tempted to snack on the guests. During the "therapeutic and calming" massages, zookeepers keep watch as the snakes slither back and forth across a bamboo bed. Once the snakes are put on, it's virtually impossible to escape because they weigh about 550 pounds combined. "I had to lie on my back on a bamboo daybed in the open air. I was briefed on what to do and what not to do during the massage," volunteer Ian Maclean told the Daily Mail. "These instructions are crucial, as you can imagine. They tell you not to blow air on the snake, because this is like being pinched on the bum, apparently. You can't shout for help as the snake can feel your vibrations and thinks you're prey or a predator, depending on the environment."

Somewhat Useless Information

Americans are the No. 1 consumers of ice cream worldwide, eating 48 pints of ice cream per person every year on average.

Immigrants at Ellis Island were served ice cream as part of the welcoming to America.

About nine percent of all the milk produced by U.S. dairy farmers is used to produce ice cream.

Vanilla is the most popular flavor, accounting for 20-29% of overall sales of ice cream with chocolate coming in a distant second.

The Library of Congress possesses a copy of a recipe for vanilla ice cream used by Thomas Jefferson written in Jefferson’s own hand. President George Washington allocated a total of $200 on ice cream purchases during the hot summer of 1790.

Charles E. Minches of St. Louis, Missouri is said to have invented the ice cream cone in 1904 at the World's Fair in St. Louis when he filled a pastry cone with two scoops of ice cream.

All ‘data’ info is from the internet sites and is usually checked with at least one other source, but I have learned that every site has mistakes and sadly once out the information is out there, many sites simply copy it and is therefore difficult to verify. Also for events occurring before the Gregorian calendar was adopted [1582] the dates may not be totally accurate.
