Random Tidbits

Before the Civil War, schools did not have summer vacation. In rural communities, kids had school off during the spring planting and fall harvest while urban schools were essentially year-round. The long summer holiday didn't come about until the early 20th century.

True Things

-- If the high-heeled Crocs aren't outré enough for you, look into this accessory: the Mundstuck, made by MYL Berlin. "Mundstuck" means "mouthpiece"; this high-style one fits over the bottom lip and decorates the chin, Oddity Central reported on June 7. MYL Berlin calls it "structured, chic and daring. ... It nestles perfectly on your lip without applying pressure or hindering your mobility." The stainless steel Mundstuck comes in black, gold or silver and in three different designs. Prices range from $75 to $140. [Oddity Central, 6/7/2021]

Idioms Origins

Cowabunga

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles started using the term, in their comics, then in their 1980s cartoon. Bart Simpson copied them in the 90s, but Chief Thunderthud, a character on the 1950s kids show, Howdy Doody, used it as a FAKE Native American language.

My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

Hopefully, those are rain clouds coming in. We need the rain to slow the fires and nourish the forest.

Interesting: Annie Kunz, a Wheat Ridge High graduate, tore up in her qualification for the Olympic Heptathlon. Her dad played football for the Farmers back in the day. Due to boundary changes, my brother played against him while attending Jefferson. The dad went on to play for the Raiders and has a Super Bowl ring. Small world.

Pictures out of North Korea show Kim Jung Un has lost ‘mucho’ weight. The government media noted his weight loss and showed his followers were concerned. No word from the government yet on why he has lost so much weight. Most governments, including ours, do not usually comment on changes like that.
