Trivia

The language of WW I

"Lousy" and "crummy" both referred to being infested with lice, while "fed up" emerged as a widespread expression of weariness among the men.

"Snapshot" came from a quickly aimed and taken rifle shot, and "wash out" described a process by which aspiring officers who failed their commissions and were sent back to their regiments, or "washed out".

The French term souvenir replaced keepsake as the primary word for a memento, following exchanges with the locals, while officers being sacked were said to have "come ungummed" from the French "degommer", to dismiss. This quickly developed into "come unstuck".

My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

Another nice fall day.

The $1.2 trillion Infrastructure compromise bill passed the House and is headed to the President for signature. Lots of good programs are on the way. I wish it had been more.

Tonight is the end of Daylight Savings Time for many. I’m not involved so enjoy setting back your clocks. My belief is let the planet and the sun do their thing. No need for humans to try and be more powerful than nature.

I get that we all must watch out for any government overreach. It looks like 26 states, AZ included, are suing the Biden administration for overreach is his latest mask mandate. I just don’t get the anti-mask people. I think they are taking ‘Don’t Tread on Me’ a bit far. I’m more of ‘I have obligations’ than a ‘I have rights’ guy.
