My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

Hope you are enjoying Labor Day.  It is a day set aside to honor the labor workers that built this nation.  It only seems right that stores should be closed today. If people didn’t shop at stores on Federal Holidays, they probably wouldn’t be open. I hope that those who must work today are receiving holiday pay. When I was much younger, I worked in a grocery store as a checker or asst. manager. I had no problem working most holidays because we were paid double time back then. Without strong unions, most workers today don’t get that perk.

It's a nice warm day so I took a nice long walk through the neighborhood.

The capital of Mississippi has been without running water for 6 days and officials say ‘it is too soon to know when running water will return’. So sad and so preventable.

Just as the UN sends inspectors into the nuclear power plant in Ukraine, Russia announces that it is cutting off gas pipelines to Europe because of a leak. Sound fishy to me.

Moon Facts…

Full Moons Make People Go Insane

For centuries, people have thought that a full moon has somehow been associated with insanity, behavioral changes, seizures, fertility, and teenage werewolves. To wit, the word “lunacy” comes from the Latin word “luna” meaning “moon.”

But numerous studies over the last decades have proven to be rather inconclusive. A few studies here and there have found connections between the moon's gravitational pull and human behavior. Others have speculated that a full moon gives off more light, which keeps people up, which leads to sleep deprivation and behavioral changes due to being tired. However, a study in the late 1980s that looked at 100 studies found that the supposed “evidence” was spotty, poorly conducted, and swayed by biases.

Myth Buster

Mussolini made the trains run on time

This presumed truth has long been a fascist propaganda tool. Unfortunately, a number of people, nostalgic for the dictator and the “good old days,” continue to propagate it. While Benito Mussolini considered the railroad industry one of his pet projects and didn’t hesitate to claim credit, Italy owes any improvements to its dubious railroad network to the previous government. In the end, however, the trains remained far from punctual despite the changes.

Historical Events

1666 – Great Fire of London ended, 10,000 buildings, including St Paul’s Cathedral, were destroyed, but only six people are known to have died.

1698 – Peter the Great decreed a tax on beards. When a citizen had more than 2 weeks’ worth of growth, a tax had to be paid, and the citizens were granted a two-sided token stating: “the beard tax has been taken” and “the beard is a superfluous burden.”

1774 – The First Continental Congress assembled in Philadelphia, PA.

1882 – 10,000 workers marched in the first Labor Day parade in New York City.

1881 – Michigan’s Great Fire of 1881 killed at least 125 people. It was the first disaster that the American Red Cross assisted with.

1914 – Babe Ruth hit his first professional Home Run.

1949 – Willard Frank Libby announced his discovery of Radiocarbon dating.

1972 – 11 members of the Israeli Olympic Team were assassinated at the Olympic Village in Munich, Germany.

1975 – Lynette ‘Squeaky’ Fromme attempted to assassinate US President Gerald Ford.
