Today’s Thoughts

Another monsoon rain due in a little while.

Last night’s discussion on Iran was very interesting. The presenter had been a professor in S. California form mid ‘70’s to early 80’s. He taught Mathematics and biology.  Before the revolution the majority of his students were from Iran. Most were pro-revolution and held daily protests on the campus during the noon hour. No violence. Just peaceful demonstrations to get rid of the Shah. Also, the US never saw Iran of much importance before the revolution. With all the changes since the revolution 40+ years ago, Iran has become a big player in Middle East politics. Even though its economy is in shambles, its infant mortality has dropped a lot and the majority of the population is now under 35. That means they know little about Iran prior to the revolution. The country is changing, and the world needs to pay attention.

Another country to watch over there is Turkey. Their run-off elections are very soon. The  outcome could change the politics in the region.

Enjoy

Origins of State Names

Oklahoma

No, it’s not named after a frying pan, though Oklahoma’s shape certainly resembles ones. The first recorded use of the name Oklahoma actually came from Spanish explorer Francisco Vázquez de Coronado in 1541, and is based on the Choctaw words okla and humma, which mean “people” and “red,” and were used by the Choctaw to describe their people. In 1866, it was Allen Wright, then Chief of the Choctaw Nation, who suggested the name for the territory during treaty negotiations.
