Today’s Thoughts

I am beginning to wonder when this heat wave is going to end.

This morning I did some laundry and then took my car for a quick wash. Cooler has been on all morning.

The US Vice President has a job that few appreciate. As a kid I remember when Allen Funt walked around and asked who the VP was. I remember because they showed a dozen or so people who had no idea and I couldn’t believe it. Well, Kamala is in the same boat. The right is constantly degrading her for her laugh, her gestures, and how she hasn’t solved any problems. Today it was announced that Kamala has broken 32 tie votes in the Senate. The only VP to break more ties was John Calhoun during his VP tenure from 1825-1832. Good for her.

Enjoy

Boomer Slang…

Right on

“Right on” was an expression used to show agreement or approval. It indicated that someone was in agreement with a statement or action and conveyed a sense of support or understanding.

Dig it

“Dig it” meant to understand or appreciate something. It was often used to express enthusiasm or enjoyment of a particular concept, idea, or situation.

True Conspiracy Theories…

Prohibition Poisonings

From 1920 to 1933, the U.S. government put a ban on all alcoholic sales due to the ethical and moral corruption it was hypothesized to cause. During this period, the government began adding toxic chemicals to industrial alcohol to discourage people from drinking it.

The chemicals used included things like kerosene, gasoline, and formaldehyde, which led to thousands of deaths and illnesses. Despite the risks, the government continued to poison alcohol until Prohibition was repealed in 1933.

Random Trivia…

Cleopatra wasn’t actually Egyptian! As far as historians can tell, Egypt’s famous femme fatal was actually Greek! She was a descendant of Alexander the Great's Macedonian general Ptolemy.

Historic Events

  • 1918 – Czar Nicholas II and his family were executed at the Ipatiev House in Yekaterinburg, Russia.
  • Disneyland was dedicated at an “International Press Preview” event held on Sunday, July 17, 1955, and opened to the public on July 18.
  • 1975 – The US Apollo 18 linked with the Soviet Soyez spacecraft
  • 1981 – The Hyatt Regency Hotel in Kansas City, MO, had a partial collapse, killing 114 people.
  • 1984 – The minimum legal drinking age was raised from 18 to 21 nationally in the United States.
  • 1989 – B-2 Stealth Bombers were successfully tested over Palmdale, CA.

“I come from Nova Scotia, and I’d never seen a theater or been inside of a theater. When I was 17, my dad asked me what I wanted to do, and I said I thought I would like to be an actor. I didn’t have any idea what it was to be an actor. None. I’d wanted to be either an actor or a sculptor, which are both essentially the same thing. That’s how it all started for me.”
