Today’s Thoughts

It has cooled off a bit. Nice!

Just a little monsoon last night. More  monsoon today.

NFL Preseason last night. Cardinals were losing to the Broncos until mid-4th quarter. The Cards tied then pulled ahead. Broncos lost 18-17. I was hoping for a much better game.

AI and all its potential have been in the news a lot. A hacker group, Def Com, is holding its annual conference that brings together the best hackers. Several major on line companies have those hackers attempting to find vulnerabilities with each company’s software that use AI. The companies are hoping this well make AI more hack proof. It’s a keep friends close and enemies closer. Great, creative project.

Enjoy

Statue of Liberty …

3. Americans were very slow to welcome Bartholdi’s statue.

So how excited were Americans about the possibility of giving a home to this new monument? Initial fundraising and support was extremely lackluster. It took about 15 years, with the statue completed and assembled in a neighborhood of Paris, before the American citizenry finally began to embrace it.

Hoax proved wrong…

Hitler diaries

The biggest scandal to hit German journalism after 1945 was the 'Hitler Diaries' hoax. On April 25, 1983, Stern magazine made a sensational announcement, claiming one of their reporters had unearthed a series of 60 volumes of journals purportedly written by Adolf Hitler. Stern and the UK’s Sunday Times halted serialization of the diaries after a sample of the papers proved the diaries were counterfeit. The forger, Konrad Kujau, was jailed, and several newspaper editors lost their jobs.

Random Trivia…

The tallest married couple ever recorded was Anna Haining Swan, who was 7'11", and Martin Van Buren Bates, who was 7'9". When she gave birth, Swan’s baby was 22 pounds.
