 Today’s Birthdays:
How many can you identify?…answers in Today’s Birthdays

My Free Rambling Thoughts
Alas, July 1st. Most of Flag was given a few showers…the one here was about 15 minutes. And we had Thunder…something I haven’t heard for a long time. This helped keep things cooled off a little and certainly helped wherever they hit in the forest. And we didn’t even come close to a record high…which is nice for a change. Mary has been commenting on the great temps on the Oregon coast…but looks like now it is there turn for heat. Karma.

Watching my Sunday news shows was very discouraging. All that violence is Egypt is very unnerving. My travel buddy, Hamdy, is heading back over there soon to visit his family. Sure hope he has a safe journey. During the last protests, his family was not involved as they live in a small village a couple of hours from Cairo. Hamdy has to land in Cairo to get home. Thankfully he has dual citizenship, so can enter and leave on his Egyptian passport so things should be OK for him. So very sad to see all the protests and the mess it is causing for their tourist industry. Today, the US said only ‘essential travel’ to Egypt was suggested. That is because of the American that was killed, but also because of the huge protests that are taking place throughout the major cities of Egypt. Democracy is so difficult.

So not glad to see that Congress has recessed for another couple of weeks…to go home and celebrate our nation’s founding. They didn’t have time to help out college students with their loan rates before they left town. They seem to believe that a college education is for those who have parents who can afford it with cash payments…because that is the American way. Cash up front, no credit. Sure is strange that this does not apply to the rest of the government.

Unusual Fact of the Day
When the American Civil War broke out, the seceding Confederate states snatched up a good bit of government property. This included everything from forts to arsenals to thousands of post offices stocked full of stamps. Not wanting the enemy to profit off their goods, the Union recalled every U.S. stamp ever issued and declared them invalid for postage. Instead, people were allowed to exchange their old stamps for replacements, which the government had quickly issued.
Joke-of-the-day
Little Johnny is in art class. The art teacher asks, “what are you drawing?"
Johnny answers, “a cow eating grass,"
"Where's the grass?"
"The cow ate it!"
"Oh... what about the cow?"
"She ran away!"

FINDING THE PATSY
If you're playing cards in any gambling game for over 20 minutes and have not figured out who the patsy at the table is, then it's you.
Yeah, It Really Happened
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Police in Florida say they are looking for four women accused of drugging men they meet at bars, going to their homes, and robbing them. The suspects -- identified as Subhanna Beyah, 25; Johnnina Miller, 25; Keshia Clark, 27; and Ryan Elkins, 23 -- have allegedly drugged and stolen items from at least four men, CNN reported Friday.
Broward County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Dani Moschella said it's possible other victims "haven't come forward because they're embarrassed." "We anticipate identifying other suspects and other victims," she said.
Scott Rosen, 54, told CNN he met two of the suspects at a Fort Lauderdale bar and invited them to his home, where one of them distracted him while the other made him a drink that knocked him out. "I got drugged," Rosen said. Rosen said he woke up to find the women gone and more than $250,000 worth of his personal items had been stolen, including his handguns, diamonds and the Rolex watch he was wearing when he brought the women to his home.
"It could have been worse," he noted. "They could have shot me with my own handgun." The sheriff's department has issued arrest warrants for the women on charges of one count of grand theft each. "We really want to get these women off the street ... because they're drugging their victims, presumably," Moschella said. "We don't know how long it will be before they end up killing somebody accidentally."
Somewhat Useless Information
  • Bananas have no fat, cholesterol or sodium.
  • Bananas were officially introduced to the American public at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition. Each banana was wrapped in foil and sold for 10 cents. Before that time, bananas came to America on the decks of sailing ships as sailors took a few stems home after traveling in the Caribbean.
  • Each banana plant bears only one stem of fruit. To produce a new stem, only two shoots - known as the daughter and the granddaughter - are allowed to grow and be cultivated from the main plant.
  • In 1516, Friar Tomas sailed to the Caribbean bringing banana roots with him; and planted bananas in the rich, fertile soil of the tropics, thus beginning the banana's future in American life.
  • In 2001, there were more than 300 banana-related accidents in Britain, most involving people slipping on skins.

All ‘data’ info is from the internet sites and is usually checked with at least one other source, but I have learned that every site has mistakes and sadly once out the information is out there, many sites simply copy it and is therefore difficult to verify. Also for events occurring before the Gregorian calendar was adopted [1582] the dates may not be totally accurate.
