Free Rambling Thoughts

I started getting ready
for my Ethiopia trip today…not packing but putting stuff I need in piles. Ellie
called to be sure I had all her emails and tickets. I asked her if my last roommate
was meeting us in Denver or in DC. I have a list of participants but didn’t’
really pay any attention. Well, turns out the Southern Baptist minister isn’t going.
He remarried this summer. I knew he had a hard time living alone, but was
surprised to say the least. Good luck to him. I’ll get the whole story on my
trip…and from the way Ellie told me, it will be a little odd.
I ordered new glasses
today and will pick them up on Tuesday. With my script, they ain’t cheap. I am
really blind in one eye and I need to get the thinnest lenses they make so I
don’t have what used to be called pop bottles. I will get a second pair when
they have a 50% off sale. I decided I didn’t want to see Ethiopia through
scratched lenses.
I finished the PBS
series on Prohibition this afternoon. What a great series. Watching and
listening to those responsible for and finally those who worked to repeal was
amazing. Even back then, it was Protestants v Roman Catholics as much as wet v
dry. It was also immigrants v those born here as much as wet v dry. It was also
women leading the cry for prohibition, then other women leading the cry for
repeal. I must have been asleep several times during those history classes I
took in high school and college. Thank you Mr. Burns, again.

Yeah, It Really Happened .
VANCOUVER, British
Columbia - A spa chain in Vancouver, Canada, is offering $50 "Calm
Down" vouchers to anyone who took part in hockey riots last June who
surrenders to police. The chain of seven Eccotique spa outlets has begun an ad
campaign inviting rioters to visit a spa and describe their looting or arson on
June 15 when the Vancouver Canucks lost the Stanley Cup to the Boston Bruins.
The confessors will
leave a fingerprint on a spa card and then turn themselves into police. When
they return to the spa with a police arrest form, they receive the $50 voucher
to be used toward massages, manicures, pedicures or waxing, the company said in
a release.
Eccotique President
Milajne Soligo said the offer was not a reward for bad behavior. "Suspects
can finally come to terms with their conscience, while the police can see
justice is done" Soligo said. "These people obviously had a lot of
pent-up anger during all the chaos. We think they need to learn how to calm
down and relax." The company published an ad showing a rioter in a police
mug shot wearing a spa face pack.

In the middle of a
forest, there was a hunter who was suddenly confronted by a huge, mean bear.
In his fear, all
attempts to shoot the bear were unsuccessful. Finally, he turned and ran as
fast as he could. The hunter ran and ran and ran, until he ended up at the edge
of a very steep cliff. His hopes were dim.
Seeing no way out of his
predicament, and with the bear closing in rather quickly, the hunter got down
on his knees, opened his arms, and exclaimed, "Dear God! Please give this
bear some religion!"
The skies darkened and
there was lightning in the air. Just a few feet short of the hunter, the bear
came to abrupt stop, and glanced around, somewhat confused.
Suddenly, the bear
looked up into the sky and said, "Thank you God, for the food I'm about to
receive..."

INDIGENOUS PEOPLE
1782: Cherokee will sign
the "Long Swamp" treaty with General Andrew Pickens in Selacoa,
Georgia. They will cede land in Georgia as reparations for the fighting during
the Revolutionary War
1788 - Gillespie's
Station is located near Knoxville in Tennessee. It is protected by a small
group of local settlers and frontiersmen. Today, a force of Chickamaugas, led
by Bloody Fellow, Categisky, Glass and John Watts, will attack the station. The
settlers were able to hold off the attack until their ammunition ran out. The Chickamaugas
then entered the buildings and killed all of the men, and took the women as
prisoners. Two warriors claimed the daughter of Colonel Gillespie as a
prisoner. To settle the argument, the warriors stabbed her to death. Most of
the prisoners would eventually be traded for captured Indians.
