My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts

Another stormy day. It has been years since we have had a monsoon like this.  The only complaint is the flooding due to all the major fires over the past few years.

Yesterday one of my readers pointed out the US also doesn’t forget. We just recently killed a terrorist from 9/11. Not much different than the Salmon Rushdie attack. That certainly got me to thinking.

Over the past few years there has been talk about how Universities are not allowing certain controversial speakers to speak on campus, for concerns that those speakers will upset the students. I was at the U. of CO in the early 70’s and I am glad that wasn’t an issue. I could handle many differing opinions. I read an article today about the NYU Student ID cards. On the back of cards are phone numbers in case of an emergency, an illness, and now a number to call if you are offended by someone’s speech that has upset you. The last one seems a step to far. That article also had a story about a CA English professor who has been giving a lecture on ‘controversial speech’ for the past 20 years. This year he was told he couldn’t do that lecture anymore because, since he used some controversial language in the lecture, it had offended at least one student. Insanity!

My new ride has several apps that I can put on my phone. One tells me when it is time for maintenance, another does everything the key fob does. The first one is free, the second is about $50/year. What will they think of next?

One Hit Wonders

The Singing Nun: 'Dominique'    The Singing Nun: 'Dominique' in English

Listen to both the Belgium and English versions.

Sure, a French-language song sung by a nun that topped the charts sounds unbelievable, but in 1963 it happened. The nun, Jeannine Deckers, also known as Sister Luc Gabrielle, would be portrayed by Debbie Reynolds in the 1966 film about her life, “The Singing Nun.” Deckers’ 15 minutes of fame and associated drama boiled over with her unfortunate and tragic death in 1985.

Historical Events

1515 – Panama City, Panama was founded.
1549 – Jesuit priest Francis Xavier came ashore at Kagoshima, Japan.
1843 – Tivoli Gardens, one of the oldest still intact amusement parks in the world, opened in Copenhagen, Denmark. It may be best known for its wooden roller coaster, Rutschebanen, or Bjergbanen (the Mountain Coaster), built in 1914
1870 – The Transcontinental Railway was completed at Promontory Point, UT, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific ports via rail lines.
1914 – The Panama Canal opened, although the first ship to pass through, The SS Ancon, went through the 50-mile waterway on August 3.
1935 – Entertainer Will Rogers and pilot Wiley Post were killed after their aircraft developed engine problems during takeoff in Barrow, Alaska.
1939 – The Wizard of Oz premiered at Grauman’s Chinese Theater in Los Angeles

1947 – India gained Independence from the British Indian Empire.
1948 – CBS launched the first network TV news broadcast.
1965 – The Beatles played at Shea Stadium in New York. It is considered the first major rock concert. There were only a few hundred watts of sound for the band, who did not have monitors to hear each other and could not be heard over the screaming of 55,600 fans. The concert grossed $304,000 – a record at the time.
1969 – The Woodstock Music & Art Fair opened in upstate New York. Tickets for the three-day event were $18 in advance and $24 at the gate, and there was sufficient sound for the 500,000 attendees.
1977 – The Big Ear, a radio telescope operated by Ohio State University as part of the SETI project, received a radio signal from deep space – “6EQUJ5.” The event was named the “Wow! signal” from the notation made by Jerry Ehman on the project. The signal appears to have come to the northwest of the globular cluster of M55 in the constellation Sagittarius, near the Chi Sagittarii star group.
