My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts
Monsoon still
on vacation somewhere. Nice day.
Bill
Richardson, former Ambassador and former NM Governor, is heading to Russia. He
is hoping to get the release/trade of two Americans. He has done it before with
great success. I sure hope he succeeds.
I took
Civics in high school. Miss Ruth Steinmeier was our teacher. She was old…probably
at least 50. She was still able to teach us a whole lot about our government. I
am amazed at the number of politically active Trump Republicans who know very
little about how our government really works. The pillow guy is screaming that
the FBI stole his phone. No, they had a warrant that was issued by a judge, who
believed that the FBI had probable cause. Trump keeps saying his home invaded
by FBI. No, they too had a warrant. It seems to me that each person who works
in politics should be required to take Miss Steinmeier’s 9th grade
Civics class and pass her tests before they start their job. I also remember
hearing ‘ignorance is no excuse’ when you break a law.
King Charles
III and I are the same age. I’m sure glad it is him and not me in his new role.
I can’t imagine how difficult it would be to be prepped for a job my entire
life and then taking that job after I retired.
I talked to
Mary yesterday. She and Mike have been busy preparing their rest area for an ultra-Marathon
from near the peaks in Flagstaff to the Grand Canyon…some 70 miles. They have worked
that station for the past 12 years. There are runners from around the world
doing this crazy race. Mike is busy so she and I were meeting for lunch today. She
is usually a few minutes late, but when she was 10 minutes late, I called her.
She had forgotten and had just finished lunch at home. No big problem…just a
sign that busy old-er people sometimes forget.
Looks like
the Railroad union and owners have reached a compromise. Let’s hope so.

Food and Cooking
A chef's hat
is officially called a toque, which is Arabic for hat.
The largest
item ever found on a menu is stuffed camel. A whole camel is stuffed with a
couple of lambs, 20 whole chickens, and 60 eggs, just to name a few
ingredients.
French
cuisine, or fine dining, emerged after the French Revolution. After the
conflict, chefs who had worked for the nobility lost their jobs, so they opened
their own restaurants for the masses.
Myth Buster
Magellan circled the globe
Magellan was indeed the first to
undertake a voyage around the world. The Portuguese sailor headed west in 1519
with the blessing of the King of Spain, convinced he would find a strait that
would serve as a new route to India and Indonesia. Plagued by famine, scurvy,
and numerous mutinies, the five-ship expedition was not easy. One boat was
destroyed, while another turned back. Magellan was finally killed by a poisoned
arrow in the Philippines on April 27, 1521. What remained of the crew continued
to sail the last ship in good condition, returning to Spain in September 1522.
