Oppenheim said he was visiting his friend Andrew Pessin in Providence when an
explosion threw him out of the home's bathroom.
"It happened in an instant like getting hit by a
cannon," he said.
Pessin was in the kitchen with his sons, ages 9, 7 and
5, at the time of the blast. "I was in the kitchen with my kids and
immediately smelled the burning smell and we just picked them all up and ran
out of the house."
Oppenheim said he suffered only a bruised knee from
the incident.
"I'm just very grateful it was me in there and
not one of the Pessin children who are little. They could have gotten
killed," he said.
The cause of the explosion was unclear, but beef and
bean burritos have not been ruled out.

My Rambling Thoughts
I got an email today that said it looks like our Tahiti trip will be
happening in March, 2022. So many emotions all at once. I’m relieved due to the
virus, I’m disappointed because I haven’t traveled internationally for a year+,
I’m excited that this adventure will finally happen. I knew that Focus Leader
Ellie, Joe Green, our tour programmer would not have us travel unsafely. Now
the wait for final conformation.
I needed to pick up a script for my angio-edema. Since I was out, I
stopped for groceries since I will not to be shopping on Black Friday this
year. Turkey breasts, pumpkin pie and fresh green beans were both on sale. I
guess I will be having turkey this Thanksgiving. I’m ready. I almost bought
some mincemeat but decided to wait. There were no fresh blueberries either…so
no blueberry pie. It will still be a great Thanksgiving.
There are so many things to be grateful for this year…being fairly healthy,
a mild winter is expected, I have lots of friends…even though I don’t see them during
this virus, I am not dealing with food insecurity, I have lots to look forward
to as soon as the vaccine is available. Things are not the best in our country,
but I have hope for a bright future.

1716 – First African lion was exhibited in America (in Boston). It was
just a single lion, which supposedly later joined a “menagerie” which was
basically a traveling circus of exotic animals.
1789 – First (unofficial) national Thanksgiving in the USA recognized
by the new government. The 1621 good harvest celebration at Plymouth in
present-day Massachusetts was first celebrated in North America.
1832 – The first New York City streetcar ran along Bowery Street in
New York, with a 12-cent fare.
1842 – The University of Notre Dame was founded.
1865 – Alice in Wonderland, by Lewis Carrol, was published.
1867 – The patent (#71,423) for a refrigerated railroad car was issued
to J.B. Sutherland of Detroit, Michigan.
1917 – The NHL (National Hockey League) formed, consisting of four
teams – Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators, and the Quebec
Bulldogs. The Bulldogs were replaced by the Arenas shortly thereafter.
1922 – English archaeologist Howard Carter opened King Tutankhamun’s
virtually intact tomb in Egypt. Over the centuries almost every mummy tomb had
been found and plundered – this was possibly the greatest archaeological find
of that period.
1941 – President Franklin D Roosevelt established that the fourth
Thursday in November would be Thanksgiving Day.
1942 – Casablanca premiered at Hollywood Theater, in New York City. It
came out in wide release on January 23, 1943.
1945 – Charlie “Bird” Parker lead a record date for the Savoy label,
marketed as the “greatest Jazz session ever.” Recording as Charlie Parker’s
Reboppers, the group included Dizzie Gillespie and Miles Davis on trumpet,
Curly Russell on bass, and Max Roach on drums. The tracks included during this
session include Ko-Ko, Billie’s Bounce, and Now’s the Time.
1956 – The Price Is Right was first broadcast, on CBS, hosted by Bill
Cullen and announced by Don Pardo.
1983 – Six gunmen broke into the Brinks Mat warehouse at the Heathrow
Airport making off with three tons of gold bars valued at almost 48 million
dollars (at that time). From a modern perspective, it is worth over
$125,000,000. Most of the gold was never recovered.
2003 – The Concorde made its final flight, over Bristol, England.
