Thoughts for the day
I’m starting the week with a nice winter
day.
The Cards beat the 49ers, I was
watching the Broncos v Chiefs game when the local Phx station decided it to be
a blowout and moved to the Chargers v Raiders game. BOO!
Biden signed the bill that restores my
SS payments without the double dipping law that cut my SS. When I took my SS at
62, I was one of the early ones to lose a big chunk of my already small SS check.
Glad to see it was finally fixed.
Bar codes on merchandise have been
around 50 years. Time for an upgrade. Soon it will be QR codes that will
contain much more information. I guess that’s a good thing.
I actually enjoyed watching the electoral
college votes being certified by the House today. It is boring. It takes about
an hour. It is democracy in action. And this year, like every count except the
previous one, went off without a hitch. Winner for democracy.
Inventions…
Josephine Cochrane - Dishwasher
Tired of her fine china getting chipped by hand washing,
Josephine Cochrane invented the first practical mechanical dishwasher in 1886.
She created a wheel of wire compartments, each designed to hold specific types
of dishes, that rotated while hot soapy water sprayed from the bottom. Her
invention was first popular in hotels and restaurants before becoming a common
household appliance. Cochrane’s basic design principles are still used in
modern dishwashers.
Random Thoughts…
Don’t be redundant; don’t use more words than necessary; it’s highly superfluous.
What’s the definition of
a will? It’s a dead giveaway.
The term “blueprint” is from the 19th century technique for copying technical drawings using
a blue dye.
With her marriage she
got a new name and a dress. It was an
emotional wedding. Even the cake was in tiers.
Origin of city nicknames…
Tampa, Florida: ‘Cigar City’
Tampa’s
reputation as ‘Cigar City’ dates to the late 19th century when, due to high
import taxes on Havana cigars, many Cuban manufacturers moved their operations
to Florida. These included Vicente Martinez Ybor who opened his factory near
Tampa in 1885. Over the next three decades more than 200 others sprang up in
the area, which was swiftly renamed Ybor City and became part of Tampa in 1887.
At its peak the industry employed tens of thousands of people and produced more
than 500 million cigars a year, propelling Tampa from a tiny town to a major
metropolis.
