Thoughts for the day

Another nice spring day.

I went out and got some grocery shopping done.

There is going to be an 18-hole miniature golf course right on Route 66. It’s about a mile from where I live and taking the place of the convenience store that closed about a year ago. The first 9-holes will be right on Route 66 with the other 9-holes behind the old convenience store. I hope this is one of those ‘build it and they will come’ things. When my brother and I were growing up there was a Putt-Putt miniature golf course on Wadsworth…a short bike ride from our home.

The winner of the Women’s Division Boston Marathon lives and trains here in Flagstaff. There are lots of marathon runners who train here…the 7000’ builds up their lungs.

Trump keeps his orders right up to the legal line. He has many awaiting deportations from a prison and even loaded the buses for the airport before they turned around and went back to the prison. They only had less than 12 hours to find due process. The ACLU found a federal judge to stop them from deporting.

Kristi Noem, the Secretary of Homeland Security went to dinner with her extended family on Easter. She was carrying a $4,000 dollar bag with her Gov’t badge, driver’s license, credit cards, keys to her apartment, and $3,000 in cash. Even with her Secret Service protection, a guy walked up, picked up her bag and walked out of the restaurant with no one noticing. This incident should have concerned us all about security.

Ancient Civilizations Few Have Heard Of…

The Minoans: Crete, Greece ©Carole Raddato on Wikimedia

Minoans were masters of art, architecture, and trade. Their island civilization flourished from around 3000 BCE to 1450. They excelled as seafarers, establishing extensive trade networks across the eastern Mediterranean, including contacts with Egypt and the Near East. Also, their advanced palaces, such as Knossos, showcase their cultural sophistication.

Random Thoughts…

Paul Desmond, the composer of the jazz classic, “Take Five” left all the profits from the song to the Red Cross after his death.

The mechanical shark used in the movie ‘Jaws’ was nicknamed Bruce, after Steven Spielberg’s lawyer.

Kids today are so coddled – Teddy Ruxpin, Elf on the Shelf, Toy Story. In my day, if dolls magically came to life, they murdered you and everyone you loved.

Taught in High School but not true…

The Salem witch trials involved burning witches

No one was burned at the stake during the Salem witch trials; most were hanged. The confusion comes from witches being burned at the stake in Europe as heretics. In the colonies, witches were accused of committing crimes against the government, which was a felony punishable by hanging. I guess all the drama of ‘Would she go up in a quick burst of smoke’ would be taken away if we put hangings in the movies.
