 Today’s Birthdays:
How many can you identify?…answers in Today’s Birthdays

My Free Rambling Thoughts
Day started off poorly, but got better…I think. While checking my computer this morning by reading some FB posts, the computer suddenly shut down. When I tried to reboot, I kept getting error messages. Tried Safe Mode, and all the other choices on that screen. Nada…just kept shutting down without opening correctly. Then on one of the reboots I did there was a restore button. Tried that, again, after waiting about 10 minutes for it to ‘restore’ still wouldn’t open. I decided to just shut it down, and start trying to figure out who could fix it. After about 45 minutes, I tried one last time before I headed to the repair shop. Like magic, it started up normally, with no problems. Not sure what happened, but it is working fine again. Maybe it was my ‘computer—heal thyself’ mantra.

While I was awaiting this, I read the morning paper. Great news…for the next week, we are expecting record high temperatures. If the forecast is right, this will be the hottest few days we’ve had since 1973. The hottest day will be close to 98°. Not looking forward to that, but I do have a portable swamp cooler I haven’t used for three years here, so guess I will be getting that going. The worst part is that those high temperatures will certainly endanger the forest even more. Our fire danger signs around the forest have stated ‘extreme’ for the last week. That is the highest level the Forest Service has. The little piece of good news is that the forecast also shows ‘scattered thundershowers’ on a few of the days. This can be very good, or very bad…depending on there and when the lightning strikes. As we head into the 4th of July celebrations, this will be a difficult time in our little mountain town.

Finally the Supreme Court has decided that the government cannot define marriage. Even several the people who voted for DOMA back in the Clinton administration are saying that it never should have been law. Since all this DOMA stuff has been in the news, I have wondered, and still wonder, why Clinton signed the bill…since he now says that it was a bad law. It is also interesting that now many more people will be able to file joint tax returns…which may not be a good thing for them. Better is that finally those couples will have access to so many government programs and benefits they have been denied for way too long. After leaving Tonalea, I got a call from one of my former employees. It seems that her ‘friend’…this was back in the 80’s…was very ill and she was unable to donate her sick leave to her sick friend. Thankfully the system at the time did allow her to donate sick leave, but there was a process that nothing to do with sexual preferance. I explained it to her, and it worked. The ‘friend’ got better and the two of them voluntarily left the BIA the next year. Haven’t heard from them, so don’t know any updates.

The whole Paula Deen thing is getting very weird. She has apologized; she has had no one coming to the news organizations saying that she is a racist. In the beginning of the mess her brother was on trial for some mistreating an employee. Mrs. Deen was not on trial. She was simply a witness for her brother. A lawyer asked her if she had ever used the N-word. She admitted that after a Black man held a gun to her head during a bank robbery, she got home and used the N-word. In her interview today, I could see how that incident would be burned into her mind. Even if she had been on trial, this seems to be more about a powerful Southern White businesswoman who some people want to topple. With one admission of using the word and no one able to show this was a pattern in her entire life this episode needs to close.

Yeah, It Really Happened
ARANSAS PASS, Texas - A Texas police officer said a traffic stop took a turn for the bizarre when he was attacked by the motorist's monkey.
Aransas Pass Police Officer Keith Moore, 21, who joined the police department three months ago, said he pulled over a truck for speeding Wednesday and when he reached into the vehicle to hand the citation to the driver, a monkey jumped up from the back seat and attacked his hand, KRIS-TV, Corpus Christi, Texas, reported Monday. Moore said it was difficult to explain the situation to his supervisor. "My sergeant thought I had initially got stung with a bee but it wasn't," Moore said. "I ended up telling him when I was walking back that it was a monkey that came out of nowhere." The incident was caught on Moore's police-issue video camera. "He's got a monkey and it attacked my hand. I'm not even kidding," Moore can be heard telling the sergeant on the recording. Police said they determined the monkey was a professional primate trained for appearances at carnivals and festivals. The driver was not penalized for the attack on the officer's hand.

All ‘data’ info is from the internet sites and is usually checked with at least one other source, but I have learned that every site has mistakes and sadly once out the information is out there, many sites simply copy it and is therefore difficult to verify. Also for events occurring before the Gregorian calendar was adopted [1582] the dates may not be totally accurate.
