Free Rambling Thoughts…
Our little retirement group had a good time at
‘Out of Africa’ down in Camp Verde. It is a privately owned group. It was
hot..near 100° but the animals had lots of shade. We saw some orbivores up
close..zebras were the only ones wandering ‘loose’ inside the 25 acre
‘Serengeti’. All the others were inside ‘habitats’ that were really large
cages. We did get close enough to feed the giraffe and the camel. It was a nice
45 minutes drive and the driver was into being a Disneyland tour guide. From my
point of view, I was not impressed that all the animals had ‘names’ but the
others in the vehicle enjoyed that part too. At the end of the drive I asked
the driver if he’d been to Africa. Turns out he had lived there for a number of
years and worked on ‘real’ drives in South Africa and Botswana. Another worker
joined us and she had spent time in South Africa too. They were doing their
jobs and I would have enjoyed sitting down and talking to them. They have a
‘tiger splash’ where four workers play with a tiger from Asia. There is a nice
pool and the team brought out lots of balloon toys for him to play with. It was
cute. Then off to the other habitats, but the temps had most of the other
animals in their caves or hidden in the shade. It was still a good experience
for those who have never been to Africa. Glad I went…but much happier to see
Africa. They also had many things to do, for a modest extra cost, which means I
will probably go back.
What a way
to open the DNC…Gabby Giffords, leading the Pledge of Allegiance. She walked
out on her own and did it her way. Truly inspirational as they panned the crowd
with tears flowing. An amazing come-back story for everyone.

In the 50’s and 60’s there were many little known R&B songs that were quickly redone in another style by a different singer that became more mainstream. You can attribute that to American society and racial views at that time or you can use it to show the influence R&B has had on American music development. Either way, here is a song that was fairly popular on the R&B charts but became a classic when Janis Joplin sang it a year later with her band Big Brother and the Holding Company.

An Antartian died and went to heaven. When he got to the pearly gate Saint Peter told him that new rules were in effect due to the advances in education on earth. In order to gain admittance a prospective heavenly soul must answer three questions: 1. Name two days of the week that begin with "T".

3. What is God's first name? The Antartian thought for a few minutes and answered...

CARLTON, Mich. - A Minnesota casino said it set a Guinness World Record by cooking up a 2,014-pound bacon cheeseburger. The Black Bear Casino Resort near Carlton said the burger concocted Sunday handily defeated the previous record of 881 pounds, 13 ounces and a Guinness adjudicator was on hand to verify the record, the Duluth (Minn.) News Tribune reported Tuesday.
"What I saw today was a feat of remarkable teamwork that resulted in a world record burger that actually tastes really good," Guinness adjudicator Philip Robertson said. The burger was topped by 60 pounds of bacon, 50 pounds of lettuce, 50 pounds of sliced onions, 40 pounds of pickles and 40 pounds of cheese.
Somewhat Useless Information…
Voyager 1 is now flitting around the fringes of the solar system, which is enveloped in a giant plasma bubble. This hot and turbulent area is created by a stream of charged particles from the sun. Outside the bubble is a new frontier in the Milky Way--the space between stars. Once it plows through, what will happen is anyone's guess. Voyager 1 is currently more than 11 billion miles from the sun. Twin Voyager trails behind at 9 billion miles. Since the spacecraft are so far out, it takes 17 hours for a radio signal from Voyager 1 to travel to Earth. Each only has 68 kilobytes of computer memory. To put that in perspective, the smallest iPod, an 8-gigabyte iPod Nano is 100,000 times more powerful.
