Today’s
Thoughts
A windy spring
day. Thankfully, no sand in the air.
I headed out
this morning for a needed haircut. All good now.
Yesterday a
couple of unmanned drones ‘attacked’ the Kremlin in Moscow. It is believed to
be an assassination attack on Putin that failed, since he wasn’t there. There
is lots of finger pointing as to who is responsible. I hope the truth comes out
soon, as this could become very dangerous.
Focus has returned
from their Portugal adventure. I hope everyone had a great time. The pictures
posted by various travelers were amazing.

Trivia
A housefly hums in the key of F
The airborne pest commonly known as
the housefly actually gives people an a cappella show. While they lack vocal
cords they still make noises and those noises are always created in the key of
F. All insects lack vocal cords, but many of them can make sounds. Insects
create noises either through rubbing your legs together, using a vibrating
membrane, or vibrating their wings. Houseflies create noise through vibrating
their wings.
Cinco
de Mayo
Cinco de Mayo celebrates Mexico's
victory over the French that helped create a feeling of national unity and
pride. A small, poorly armed group of about 4,500 men were able to stop the
French invasion of a well-equipped French army that had between 6,000 and 8,000
soldiers.
The major celebrations of Cinco de
Mayo have largely been contained to the town of Puebla, about 100 miles east of
Mexico City, where the original battle took place. In reality, Cinco de Mayo is
much more popular in America, where citizens of Mexican descent hold festivals
all over the country.
While Tequila holds a long and
storied place in Mexican and Mexican-American celebratory traditions, the
margarita didn't even exist in 1862! While tequila, ice, lime, and sugar all
existed in 1862, they weren't brought together in the form of a margarita until
about 1930.
Annual Cinco de Mayo festivals in
Houston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Denver, and St. Paul, regularly draw hundreds of
thousands of people. In fact, the world's largest Cinco de Mayo celebration is
the Festival de Fiesta Broadway held in Los Angeles, California. It routinely
draws about 600,000 people to partake in song, spirit, and dance.
Origins of State Names
Louisiana
Take a trip down to the Bayou and you’ll see
French influence everywhere you look. If you can’t make it down South, then
just take one look at a map of the United States. There you’ll see the name
Louisiana, which was named by French explorer René-Robert Cavelier Sieur de La
Salle in 1682. He named
Louisiana Le Louisiane in honor of the
French King Louis XIV, and after the territory was divided up as part of the
1803 Louisiana Purchase, the state of
Louisiana retained its name.
